Question #1: i have an hp pavillion dv9000 notebook with 2gb ram and oem xp media edition which, due to defect, hp is replacing with another dv9000 with oem vista. if i reformat to eliminate vista can i install my oem media edition in the new computer? i have the computer keys and os license numbers for both.

Question #2: can i nondestructively repartion my hd to achieve a dual boot?

Last question: can i copy an image only leaving out the bloatware?

    1. Yes.

    2. Yes. Use something such as GParted or Norton PartitionMagic

    3. You can create a HD image of your drive, which you can use to restore your system to in the future. There are several applications which do this, although I haven't had personal experience with any of them.

Thanks Budding. One more though. Can I install an os on an external usb or firewire hd and set the bios to boot from it?

You can boot from a flash drive, you just have to go into your BIOS boot options and tell it to boot from flash drive before booting from hard drive. I think you may be able to boot from larger external HDDs also, but it depends on your BIOS, only the newer BIOSs have the ability to recognize external HDDs as a boot source
