This might happen if Windows crashed or had a serious error in your previous session. As long as it doesn't boot into safe mode everytime, you should be OK.

If it detected a hardware or driver failure and rebooted, one of the options is safe mode, that may be a default under some circumstances. Does it do this all the time or just once?

Another reason is because you powered off the system incorrectly (hit power button rather than Start -> Shut Down) or if you lost power before proper shutdown (battery died or AC power pulled and no batery connected).

And the 3rd time's the charm, does it happen all the time and does it successfully boot into Safe Mode or does it give an error?

If it does happen all the time, you could have something corrupt in your system, possible drivers or one of the Windows files. During power on, just the F8 key so you get a boot menu and select Last Known Good Configuration. If it is a bad driver or messed up registry setting, this should get you back up and running.

If you're capable of getting into the OS in Safe Mode, try removing the driver/software you last installed or revert the changes to did back to how they were and see if it'll boot in normal mode.

If you're incapable of successfully logging onto the system in Safe Mode, they your OS is screwed. You'll have to either repair the OS or reload it.

Just moved it to the Software section as it suits the forum better.

If you just connected a new AC Adapter (I'm assuming since you said power source), then it's possible you corrupted some of your files.

    Just a couple questions:

    1. Are you capable of ooting into Safe Mode successfully?
    2. Have you tried the F8 -> Last Known Good Config option? Does it work?

If question 1 is no, you need to reload or repair the OS.

If question 2 is you haven't tried, give it a try and see. If it still doesn't work, then again, you'll have to reload/repair your OS.

A repair of the OS doesn't need to re-format. If you reload, that also doesn't have to reformat as you can re-install the files ontop of itself.

If you have data on this drive, you may want to get an external USB drive enclosure for 2.5" drives and put your notebook drive in that. Connect to another computer and transfer out your data before continuing. If nothing in the drive is important, just go ahead with the reload/repair/re-format.

Ok, but you're still haven't answered question #1 or #2,

    1. Are you capable of booting into Safe Mode successfully?
    2. 2. Have you tried the F8 -> Last Known Good Config option? Does it work?

If you are, it'll show a popup box telling you you're in Safe Mode as well as Safe Mode written in all 4 corners.

If you are capable of getting into safe mode successfully, then you need to test the Last Known Good Configuration option.

DON'T select normal because your system is already having trouble booting in normal mode, telling it to go in normal mode will not fix the problem.

Select the Last Known Good Configuration and see if you can get into your OS. This mode will restore a good copy of the registry and driver set in the event you messed something up by trying to install the wrong drivers or deleted something from registry.

If Last Known Good Configuration works, you should be set and everything should boot normally, but if it doesn't work, you'll probably have to rebuild/repair your OS.

Here are the steps from Microsoft on how to reapir your XP.

It's usually the last program or hardware driver that's causing this safe mode loading. Try to delete that offending program/driver under safe mode. If you can't just do a system restore and cross your fingers.
