does windows 7 have support for utilizing a thumb reader?

I recently bought a sager np 8662. There were a couple issues installing the drivers from the CD, but it seems to all be working now.

Exception: the thumb reader does not seem to work. I did install the driver from the CD and the device manager detects the thumb reader. When I try to set the device in windows 7 biometric page, it says no thumb reader detected...is this a problem inherent in windows 7 or do I need to do something extra?

Did you try to go into the device manager and scan for new hardware? Maybe you have a yellow question mark in there which would the the fingerprint reader? Or maybe it's there and just needs enabled. If not maybe you should try going into the BIOs on system startup and seeing if you can enable it there. I know Sager integrates it with their BIOs

My Asus M70Vm has an Authentec fingerprint scanner, W7 installed a driver that it comes with, I didn't have to install a separate driver, and that works fine.

W7 also has an Authentec app that allows fingerprint logon.

Try uninstalling whatever drivers you're trying to install, and delete them, and then let W7 scan for hardware changes and install the driver itself, assuming it has one for your brand of fingerprint scanner.

Mine is a Broadcom USH w/ swipe sensor. Seems like Win7RC doesn't have driver for it. I have to install Dell's Wave Software for it to be recognised and all.

my Dell XPS M1330's biometric (UPEK) reader was automatically recognised and drivers automatically installed.... windows allows me to use my fingerprint to logon... no need to hunt for drivers on my device...

i think windows 7 is well polished... only driver i had to install manually was the bluetooth stack...

Yep, and even then it will only work with that crappy Wave software, and nothing else. Windows 7 built-in support will not recognize nor be able to use the fingerprint sensor in any way, due to the ingenious way Dell hooked that sensor into that nonstandard USH device. Unless Dell/Broadcom releases Windows 7 drivers for that, that fingerprint reader is as good as useless in Windows 7. Same thing for all Latitudes and Precisions with this kind of a setup. Complain to Dell...
