After performing a clean install of the OS, drivers, and your main programs why not just create a disk image onto an external storage device (HD).

If at any time you have a need to reformat your HD you can just reinstall the disk image and you are good to go. Windows 7 has all the backup software included with the OS to create the backup image and the method to restore.

Since drivers are often updated by the hardware manufacturers, I prefer to download them whenever I need to install them. I agree it can be kind of a pain though... but Windows Update can fetch the majority of them for you automatically.
