Hi i'm thinking of putting xp 64 as my 3rd Os. Will the ibm update software recognize this and update all drivers to 64 bit..i.e sound drivers, wi fi.. etc or do 32 bit work? I would love to utilize the extra ram if it goes ahead. I'll be using ram Hungry audio software.
Anyone done this with no probs?

    Thanks for the help.

XP-64bit was a bit of a ugly stepchild and never got widespread driver support from many laptop manufacturers, lenovo included.

stay with XP or move up to a later OS if you need 64bit.

i agree, but xp win is still the best reliable os for Daw apps. i.e cubase and vsti's etc years of support for audio apps from developers. So it looks like the SSD upgrade? i suppose i'm gonna need to bios patch my machine to rid the 3gb sata II cap? :)

You mixed modes "3GB sata II patch"?

Yes, you'll want to put in the Sata II patch. Now 3gb? That's a 32 to 64 bit concern.

i use windows 7 64bit with my daws, no problems. and i know a lot of musicians that do. maybe it's time to move on?

just don't move to xp64. it's really not a widely supported os. it was mainly a test for those that where in need for a 64bit windows back when none existed. only vista and win7 are really supported 64bit platforms.

    thanks for the replies!

1 Sorry, the 3gb is a cap i'm refering to in regards to sata speeds. At the moment my t61 is capped at 1,5 gb, but i have to flash with a custom bios to take full advantage of speeds. It's an ibm issue.

2 maybe it is time to move on to win 7 64bit, only trouble is i don't know where to start tweaking with win 7, i don't want to spend months like i did with xp pro...which i know excatly how to..after much practice. but win7??

Perhaps you know of a DAW tweak list you can point me to? i like to plan in advance. i will also use dual boot in case of probs and i can switch back to xp pro.
i use mainly Cubase vsti's , Sibelius. maybe the SSD will compensate for having only 4gb in a 32bit otherise i'll use 64bit and vsti's are 'ready only'. i will rarely record audio. Good to hear from another DAW user.

there's no real tweaking needed on win7. just install it cleanly (don't use the installation made by the oem of choice, their setups have shown to have more problems with audio dropouts and similar things), and install the drivers you need for your audio stuff.

i never tweak my os' and use my laptop (a slow one as it's a 12" with ulv processor) even on stage, no tweaks applied. i was even performing with beta-versions of windows, beta versions of daws, beta versions of service packs, etc..

just trust your stuff a little more helps :)

    (and an ssd helps, too)

impressive...most impressive :) look forward to trying this win 7 out..definetly gonna choose to make it look like classic windows...hope there's an option for it like there was on win xp. Don't need the visual baggage or eye candy.

the eye candy is actually taking away cpu resources by doing it on the gpu => guaranteeing more stable audio performance.

and why not eye candy? we're not in 1990 anymore. if it has a technical advantage (which it has), increases usability (which it does), why not have it look pretty?

because the world aint pretty Dave.. ;) though..i do find your opinion interesting and optimistic.i wonder if the audio froums need to break out of the 90's too. Anyway gives me hope to finally feel like i'm out of the 90's :D
by the way i love Federer..the king!

if there's one thing worse than computer tech guys that are still stuck in the early days of xp at most (and still love their win2000 and win98 and how it was all 'better' back then), then it's musicians. esp. electronic ones. one could think they're forward thinking and all (the electronic ones), but no. they're ALL stuck in the 90ies and can't relearn and evolve with their stuff :)

and btw, the world is as pretty as you make it for yourself. if you like to make it ugly for no other purpose than to be able to rant about it, do so. i turn on aero and enjoy it. then again, a lot of musicians need the world to be ugly and unfair and bad and evil and dirty to make good music :)

    yeah, federer is king ^^

i wish. well, better than the uk air maybe. but there are lots of "new == bad" thinkers in here. and the tendency is that they grow in power (as they do worldwide).

but i just don't care :) i try to go my way enjoying what i can out of it, and make it as enjoyable for others as they allow themselves to have it. some just don't want it (yeah, detlev.. if you read this... :))

I wouldn't count on software update finding the drivers, based on my previous XP x64 experience with a laptop that wasn't designed for it (albeit not a T61). You'll probably have to research drivers for the individual components yourself. However, some people have already attempted this on IBM *61's. That might help.
