i know the Betas out, but when is the finished version gonna be out, soda speak
thanks

No one knows yet.
-
It's Microsoft, don't expect anything too soon. Plus IE8 is junk, imo. =]

Those are his inner fanboy words of wisdom, so you can ignore it. Kidding...
-
Lawl. I'm no fanboy. It's just known that IE is unsafe. And there was already many browsers with tabbed browsing before IE7. When IE7 came with tabbed browsing, that was OLD news. 8]

I don't know when IE 8 will be launched... but here's an article about some of the stuff in IE 8 beta 2... and more importantly, here's the screenshot gallery that goes with the article.
-
lol I hate IE, die microsoft, firefox is better we all know that
-
I'll withhold judgment on IE 8 until it's actually released.
-
Why bother with IE? Less secure, takes longer to open, does stupid crap like disabling ActiveX controls whenever I open a VRML file. When IE "introduced" tabbed browsing, I was happily tabbing on both Firefox and Opera. Go Firefox, death to IE.
-
I believe its currently expected to be released sometime in November this year.

FF won me over, IE has to do something mighty special to win me back! -
Hopefully it wont crash like IE7 does for me. Go Firefox 3.
-
I'll stick w/ IE and Max. FF3 is excellent though, loads pages a tad faster than IE (7).
-
-
IE is terrible, don't waste time with it.
-
-
Duh...everyone knows tab browsing been around for years..but I wasn't into programs like Firefox...I just use it if I have an issue w/ IE. (as a backup browser) So when IE7 brought tab browing into effect that sealed the deal for me. Yes IE has it's issues but my gosh Firefox isn't the best either.
-
Well, since everyone is giving their own opinion, I guess I'll do the same.
I've used the beta version of Internet Explorer 8 and so far, I don't like it. But, I will not make my final judgement on it until the final release of it as the beta is for TESTING PURPOSES ONLY. I used to use Firefox, then 3 came out. I hate it. It sucks. Open source sucks. Open source is for people that are too **** cheap to pay for something so they just write their own crap that has horrible technical support or driver support. But yet they are willing to spend thousands upon thousands of dollars to have some uber hardware just to run Linux. Ok, I'm done. Sorry for getting off subject. -
Agreed, looking over the changes for IE8 almost all of them can already be found on FF3 or with an extension.
Microsoft will need to do alot to win over non-IE users, they might as well make it a decent browser for less tech savvy people and leave FF, Opera and co to compete for more demanding users. -
To answer the question of the topic: Microsoft released Beta 2 (targeted for all consumers) on August 27, 2008.[1] The final version is scheduled to be released in 2008. ( Wikipedia)
It all comes down to personal preferences. But in fact, Firefox is better than Internet Explorer but from personal usage, I can't see the difference. So that's a matter of preference although Internet Explorer might crash a bit more. For me, that's not a reason to stop using it. -
I prefer Firefox but I'll give IE8 a try.
It's always good to have options...lol.
But yeah it's hilarious to me how Firefox had tabbed browsing like AGES before IE. -
On the plus side Microsoft has finally decided to fully support web standards in its rendering, perhaps the days of box hacks are coming to an end?
With the release of Beta 2, depending on bugs and how polished it is the next 3 months should see some extra movement towards a release.
p.s don't quote me on that, its only a guesstimate -
The things that bug me the most about IE are how slow it opens and how the weird the navigation buttons are placed. Why are stop and refresh in the middle of nowhere?

IE8 Beta 2 looks pretty good; however, it will not install alongside any other version of IE. Too tied into the OS to run multiple versions? Shame on you Microsoft! Given Microsoft's track record of the final beta being the GA version, I believe I will wait for a GA version that does not end in dot-zero before I risk it.
-
IE also write everything on virtual registry, and it runs on lowest priviledge on Vista machine. Practically, it is in lock-down mode. Well, give me something on FF. I just gave you the fact right here, so this is your turn. -
- FF is still much less commonly used than IE (believe it or not), so it's less likely to be targeted for exploits
- Firefox has a better track record of fixing their known security vulnerabilities in a timely manner. (Of course, you need to keep your copy of Firefox up-to-date to get this benefit.) With IE, vulnerabilities tend to go unpatched for longer.
However, as you pointed out, IE does have protected mode (an extra-low-privilege sandbox) if you use it in Vista and keep UAC on. So, that's a benefit of IE that Firefox doesn't offer yet. -

And IE8 is still several months away from release.

i like IE... runs faster than FF - less resources... native to windows so its more "seamless" if you ask me.
never been a fan of FF tbh - its to "busy" and pages take longer to load.
IE ftw. -

the article linked in the bottom right shows how slow microsoft can be when responding to vulnerabilities. -

All I will say is that both Firefox and Opera can access the internet from my PC; IE is blocked by my firewall (on purpose) and any such attempt results in a pop-up asking if I want to allow it or not. I don't.
-
-
FF also uses more resources, i don't know why people say it uses less, it ALWAYS uses slightly more than IE on my machine according to Task Manager.
I never cared about themes or moving around buttons... sound silly to me. -

IE8 and IE7 cannot coexist on the same machine.
If you install IE8 on an XP/SP3 machine it may become permanent, and you cannot uninstall it, and you cannot fall back to IE7.

After browsing with IE8 for almost a day, I can say that it's actually pretty good. Though, not good enough to make me switch from Firefox. A step in the right direction, none the less.
What I appreciate the most is compatibility mode switch (which will absent if website is properly coded). This will show amateur web designers that their websites actually are not comply with standard and broken. Many of them says I was talking BS about their websites' errors since they appear just fine on IE7.
Now, more people would adopt web standard and we would have less half-baked websites on the Internet. -
@mk.2, The reason there are so many websites that don't comply to standards is because of IE. Designers had to choose between sites working on IE, or the majority of their viewers not seeing the page as it should be because of the browsers poor standards implementation.
@livesoft, I know that report was two years matured but it does give an indication of how far behind the trend Microsoft are. The situation now will be better, especially given that windows defender and automatic updates are now shoved in our direction. -
I installed the beta this am. So far looks good but the update checker from Hippo and the KeePass programs are not working!! Anyone having troubles?

It's a beta
-
stevo you might want to try the support pages for those to see if they have any information on it.
Oh and although I would have thought it too firefox actually has a much lower memory usage than IE.

The first article looks at all the major browsers in detail, including ff2 and 3 the second one was also pretty interesting to read. Hope this debunks any misconceptions about IE superiority -
IE is not superior to Firefox, but I don't see any difference is speed of the browser. Overall, it comes down to the user's preference

It looks as if IE8 may be released (GA) fairly soon. Regardless, when it is released I will update from IE7 to IE8 to be current (and continue to use Firefox 3).
anyone know when IE8 will be out
