for some reason, adobe acrobat refuses to be disabled from startup. i unchecked the box but after restart it would create a duplicate one that is checked:

Once you uncheck the startup entry, you can try deleting the actual registry entry to see if that helps.

-To do so, open the run dialog box and type "regedit" without the quotes.
    -Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>Shared Tools>MSConfig>startupreg
-In that folder, delete the Adobe Acrobat folder. Be careful not to delete anything you don't know what it is.
-Close the registry editor, restart, and check to see if Adobe created another startup entry. If it did, it's likely there's a setting in Acrobat Reader that says "run at startup" (or something like that) enabled.

Doesn't that sort of monkey-shines essentially turn Adobe acrobat into some sort of proto-malware?

Uninstall it and use Foxit PDF reader instead. Adobe is junkware.

Why do you want Adobe reader to start up automatically?

    Sorry misunderstood...
You can use Windows Defender > Software explorer to remove the process from auto start.

Oh wow. Foxit is pretty cool :)

there is... you can change the icon to whatever you want, rightclick the icon, to to properties, and on the 2nd tab you should be able to change the icon. you only need to keep the original source file where the acrobat icon is stored.

...it is ridiculous, but my mom is the same, wants to use icq icon for trillian.

I used Startup Manager to disable Adobe on start up. Can also using Revo uninstaller, tools, autorun manager or if I'm not mistaken, msconfig.

You can also use Ccleaner to delete the startup entry.

WinPatrol in another good tool to control startup options and monitor what wants to install itself to start-up.

That'll change the program that opens the file along with the icon associated with the new chosen program.

Yeah, hard to imagine having the adobe icon on your files that open in Foxit. I guess if you have both programs installed, you could right click and open with rather than double clicking.

j-dogg, the change icon option is only available for folders and shortcuts. if you want to change files themselves, that option is not available.

unlimitedx... you have the acrobat exe itself on your desktop? this IS how to change icon for a shortcut. at least i don't see any reason why to care about an icon somewhere deep in the program files directory...

I might have phrased what I intended to say incorrectly. I guess what I meant to say is I want to make all pdf files open with foxit while having the adobe acrobat icon (instead of foxit icon) on those files.

Right clicking on the files themselves the change icon option is not there. I'm not interested in just changing shortcut icons but the files themselves is what I am after.
