i was just trying to access a folder in windows 7, and even though i'm administrator (my laptop), i'm denied access. i tried a couple things like changing permissions specifically for that folder, and changing ownership to me (default owner was SYSTEM), but still no luck. googled and it seemed that other have encountered similar problems. what's the easiest solution?

^ thanks for the reply. i think that i've tried the suggested solution in that link, at least for the second case (the other solution, for the problem where one could not logon as administrator, does not seem to apply), and it didn't seem to work. from my limited googling, it seems one might need a special software to unlock it, but this seemed rather curious. so i was wondering if there is something else.

It just might help if we knew WHAT folder you are trying to access. There are some "virtual" folders in Win7 that don't actually exist and you will never be able to access them. Yours just might be one of those, but since you included no specifics we can only guess as to what solution to suggest.

it's the c:\Documents and Settings folder.

i thought that i needed to access it to migrate my thunderbird folders, but it looks like i don't need to. in Windows 7, they seem to organize some things differently than in XP. still, just out of curiousity, ... just got a new laptop so i'm coming from XP to Windows 7.

i also found out that i couldn't copy a large zip file to my c: folder (hard disk access denied) from my thumb drive. i haven't looked at this much, but thought it might be a firewall (using mcafee) issue (i could extract it to from the thumb drive to the c: drive, but couldn't copy it directly from the thumb drive). again, not a life-threatening issue, but out of curiousity ...

That's not a real folder; this is a symbolic link that's only there for backwards compatibility. You should not touch this link in any way, and there is never a reason to touch it.

That's correct. The correct location is now C:\Users\Default\AppData\...; more likely, if you are talking about your personal Thunderbird folders, they should be at C:\Users\your_user_name\AppData\Local\... or at C:\Users\your_user_name\AppData\Roaming\...

well, that answers my question. i guess i should assume that if i'm administrator and i'm denied access, there's probably a good reason for this. is there any way to figure out whether a folder (or file) is a symbolic link/virtual folder (is there a list of them somewhere, just for future purposes)?
