ok i just built a new computer which has 4gbs and in task manager it shows 4086 total which is right.

but in free memory it shows 2381 and than 842 cache so that gives 3223???

it shows vista is useing 1.20gb in the memory box.

    but is this right?

in everest it shows it right shows used 1231mb

and free 2855mb so that put it at 4086mb

so just makeing sure if this all looks ok?

my laptop asus g50vt also shows about the same the cached and free doesint add to 4gb just aorund 3gb to 3.2gb but in everest it shows right.

so it looks like its just how vista does the memory management??

I'm assuming you have Vista x86 (32bit version) installed on the computer. With a 32bit OS, only about 3-3.2GB of RAM will be available to the computer.

If you want to be able to access all 4GB of RAM, you will need to install a 64bit OS.

    This is the case.

    Another thing:
In Vista "vanilla" the OScould only see 3GB - only since SP1 is Vista 32Bit able to see more than 3GB.

Then there is RAM usage by hardware - somehow my Intel X3100 has acess to about 1GB of RAM...
I think its the "spare GB"

And for information of 32Bit vs. 64Bit, see my sig :)

I wouldn't make that assumption. If Task Manager is showing 4086 total, then I'm pretty sure that this is 64-bit Windows.

The answer is that you can't add "Cached" and "Free" memory and expect to get total. It doesn't add up on my machine either. I think it's just not intended to add up like that.

I just look at the graph and the "total", and ignore cached and free. I just don't really understand what those two are measuring exactly.

Yeah I think so... I only have 2 gb so my numbers are different...
but nothing you've said so far makes me think that there's any problem.

Vista x86 SP1 and later reports the amount of installed RAM in the system property pages, Task Manager should report the amount actually available.

You are right, I just didn't catch that the Task Manager was what was showing the 4GB. Missed that.

It sounds like everything is working correctly. It sounds like the BIOS is reserving that last bit of RAM (maybe for shared video memory or something else).
