I recently upgraded to ZA7.0 from 6.5. However, after I every time I boot up, I get a windows error message followed by a BSOD (stop d0000144 unknown hard error). I tried re-installing several times, but it didn't help. The problem went away when I went back to ZA 6.5. However, I'd still like to use ZA7.0 since the anti-virus part is developed with Kaspersky. Does anyone know of a way to remedy this?

can u re.install ZA7, boot ur system into safe mode and see if u share some more error code?

BSOD (stop d0000144 unknown hard error) is quite a general error, sub-error codes would help with the diagnostic

I can boot into safemode, but don't get any error that way. I only get the error if I start normally. When I do, I alway get a windows error message first before the BSOD. The error message is something about svchost.

I've already look there, but didn't find anything that would remedy my problem.

See if you can start Zonealarm while in safe mode and check to see if it is blocking svchost from connecting to the internet. I think I have 4-5 instances of svchost running at any one time and they all want to act as a server and connect to the net.

If not I would uninstall it, reinstall and have the application and component monitor set to ask you what to do. It's kind a pain but it works.

http://www.hackfix.org/software/uninstall/zone.htmlHere's alink on how to uninstall it completely so you can reinstall without the setting being the same

I always let ZA ask me what to allow and what not. I can't believe that Zonelabs would release a software that crashes on a 4 month old comp

i take one more shot at this - boot into safe mode:
open up ur ZA configuration (right click on the icon -> restore ZA control Centre):
    . disable/uncheck antivirus monitoring
    . disable/uncheck e-mail protection

    cheers ...

I've thought about this too. However, the whole point of upgrading to 7.0 is so that the original ZoneLabs anti-virus would be replaced by the Kaspersky one. Even if this worked if this worked, it would defeat the purpose of upgrading... unless you have something else in mind?

I have been using ZA for years and have gotten to the point that if everything is working fine I don't upgrade. They come out with a buggy one every once in while and it is a real pain to uninstall the upgrade and reinstall the old version.

my bad, i should have clarified it a bit more - disable/un.check the above fucntions within the ZA configuration is ONLY pertaining to ZA and not to other av apps that u have

ZA7 comes with built.in monitoring virus software (kinda like windows watching ur av to see if it is up.to.date) and e.mail scan - i turned these off since i have avast performing the e.mail and virus scan and also letting ZA performing the scan really slow down my upload speed.

    hope that it is clear

    cheers ...

I think you might be thinking of data mining conflicts with other anti-virus software. I don't have any other antivirus installed, though I do have several spyware programs... However, i'll try disabling it anyways. Thanks in advance!

I had a similar problem with Zone Alarm Security Suite 7. After a multiple reboots and removing ZA7 (in safe mode) and reinstalling and getting the same error message but the error only occurred AFTER I updated the antivirus/antispyware definitions. I was also running Spyware Doctor 4.0, so thinking that there might be a conflict between the programs, I also uninstalled SD4 and then reinstalled ZA7. Now it loaded/updated fine. I have yet to reinstall Spyware Doctor 4 so we'll see if the error/BSOD makes a surprise reappearance or not.

Huh. I also have Spyware Doctor Installed. I'll try that. However, besides spyware doctor, I also have ad-aware, spybot, AVG anti-spyware installed, so if uninstalling spyware doctor doesn't work, i'll just uninstall all of them. Funny, i thought only anti-virus software has conflicts with one another, not anti-spyware ones too.

I have a 3 year old Dell Latitude X300 running XP Pro (SP2 and all subsequent updates) and, amongst other stuff, Zone Alarm and Spyware Doctor. 10 days ago I was prompted by Zone Alarm to install version 7 and I downloaded it to a partition I use for data and installed it. Later, I too had the BSOD error message "STOP: d0000144 unknown hard error", though at that stage I did not know it was Zone Alarm 7 causing the problem. Booting into safe mode gave no error message but nothing I did in the way of disabling hardware etc made any difference when I then rebooted in normal mode. Windows would not allow me to go back to any restore points. I ran the extended Dell diagnostics - no problem shown. After phone calls to Dell Support, at their suggestion I reformatted my C: partition and reloaded my software, some of it (including ZA7 and Spyware Doctor) previously downloaded and saved on my data partition. The same problem reappeared. I therefore reformatted again, but this time I accidentally loaded Norton Antivirus when loading Norton Utilities. I tried to uninstall Norton Antivirus but it only partially uninstalled. Zone Alarm 7 then would not load its anti-virus part because it thought Norton anti-virus was still there. But this time there was no BSOD when rebooting - but no anti-virus program either, so I dare not continue with this configuration.

I reformatted again, this time without Norton Antivirus but with Spyware Doctor and ZA7 loaded and again I got the same BSOD error message. I was of course now certain it was ZA 7 anti-virus causing the problem (you may think I took a long while to get there!), so I reformatted the C: partition for the fourth time and reloaded all my software, except this time instead of ZA 7 I loaded the last version of ZA 6 that I had saved on my other drive (and, as it happens, did not reload Spyware Doctor). Lo and behold, no problems.
I was then able to get online and search to see if anyone else had this problem!

I would like to have the Kaspersky virus checker, as it's meant to be very good. Also, unfortunately, it looks as if I will be prompted every day to install ZA7. But as a result of seeing this forum, I am weighing up reloading Spyware Doctor against upgrading to ZA7. I think these days spyware is more of a problem than viruses (I haven't had a virus for years!) so I might stick with Spyware Doctor, as that had very good reviews for spyware.

    Does anyone
    - have a view on the comparative risks of viruses and spyware?
    - know if the problem is now fixed in ZA7 if I download it again?

Wish I had seen this forum before all this happened - I have lost a week over all this.

    Thanks
