widgets take up WAAAAAAY too much ram. you're much better off with something like samurize. plus, widgets aren't customizable like the meters in samurize. take a look at the screenshots to see how robust it is.

currently, with samurize, i am monitoring...

    1. cpu usage percentage
    2. cpu temp
    3. fan speed rpm
    4. ram used
    5. hd space used
    6. hd space free
    7. download speed
    8. upload speed
    9. wifi signal strength
    10. SSID name
    11. AC Power / Battery life remaining
    12. outside temperature (for my zip code)
    13. graphic displaying weather conditions (sun when sunny, clouds when cloudy, etc.)
    14. time
    15. day
    16. date
    17. buddy list from trillian (there's a plugin)
    18. calendar
    19. uptime
    20. winamp song title : artist : time : time remaining
    21. every 3 mins, it polls my pop server and pops up a graphic and count if there are any emails to be retrieved.

1-13 are displayed with animated progress bars as well as text labels.

all of this takes <10 mbs of ram... usually around 5-8 megs depending on whats going on.
