    i am buying a e1505 dell laptop and their xp pro upgrade costs 119 dollars...however, my dad has the xp pro cd at his office and so i can get that for free, but the question is when i do that and install xp pro, will it affect the pc i order? liek software that comes iwt the pc is gone...or the memory and processor will be changed etc....or should i jus go ahead and add the dell upgrade? thx for any advice...btw....wen u install xp pro on ur own ins tead of gettin it from the company, do u change anything in the computer at all? thx

    The only thing that will happen is that it will format your XP partition so in a sense you will lose all of the software that Dell preloaded on there. Most users don't like the software anyway, and are happy to get rid of it.

    Your Media Direct features (you will need to repair it though) will still work as well as everything else in the laptop will remain the same. Changing your operating system will not change any of the hardware.

    The only thing that will change will be the operating system, but XP Home/MCE/Pro are all very similar - just a few different features within each.

    Boogajamooga, you can't just use your dad's license for XP Pro. You need one license per computer and you would not be eligible for any site-licenses in effect at your father's office.
