You can use the same key, it should work
It's a gray area I think, but my friend has 2 computers with the same key and they are both running activated versions of Vista Home Premium

    Hope this helps

The old key was OEM, so legally no you cannot use it.

What do you guys mean by OEM??

I was talking about using the key, found on the sticker on the bottom of the laptop.
Can this be used like that legally???

    Thanks

OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer (i.e. Dell, HP...)

Microsoft's User Agreement clearly statest that a product key can only be used on one system. Installing Windows (any version) on more than one PC with the same Product Key is illegal.

OEM versions of Windows are 'married' to the system on which they're installed. So even if you have the Product Key and Installation CD that came with your computer, when your computer eventually dies- so does the right to use that Product Key and CD!

Tinderbox- there are plenty of XP OEM discs with product keys (and COA) listed on eBay. If you can find a seller who will ship to the UK, you should be able to find one for around $70 USD, which is roughly £47.

Thanks alot for clearing that up (+ rep ;))

I don't think that is fair
I mean if we have bought the license legally, we should be able to use it more than once.
The average user has no more than 3 pcs at home, so allowing to install it on three pcs seems to make more logical.

These are of course my opinions, and if I'm not supposed to discuss this, please tell me and I will delete my post

If it came with your old laptop isn't it perfectly legal to use the key from the COA on the old laptop?

That eBay sale doesn't look legit. A Dell OEM CD has probably already been activated on a Dell PC and thus cannot be used on any other CD. It's theoretically possible that someone turned down the Windows license agreement and thus it hasn't been activated, but the chances of that are pretty low. In all likelihood it's already been activated on a Dell PC. If not, I believe it would be legal, but I'd say 99% it's already been activated.

A non-brand OEM CD is the safer option. There it still depends on the integrity of the seller, but there's a much better chance it hasn't been used since it didn't come already installed a new computer.

I'd still recommend a store-type channel such as Amazon if only because you know you'll be getting the real thing, but a couple eBay auctions that look a bit more legitimate are this one for £48. There is one for £30 that looks less fishy than the one you linked, but the price just seems too low to me.
