I'm trying to chose whether to order my new comp with XP or Vista, I will be using it primarily for gaming and multimedia. I've heard that Vista is a better overall OS, but lacks XP's mature drivers. Will Vista be better when it can finally update its drivers, or is the OS itself the problem. Any info is appreciated.
    Cheers!

Might as well get Vista for DX10.

If gaming is a major concern, XP is by far a better choice. Whether you believe MicroSoft that 3rd party drivers are to blame, or ATI/nVidia that the core OS is to blame, Vista is substantially slower in almost all games on all systems with all drivers. And no current GPU can handle DX10 at all, making it all but useless.

Multimedia wise, Vista offers some nice features, including a much improved WMC and WMP 11. Still, XP doesn't put the limits on HD content that Vista does, a very important concern going into the future. DRM is so rampantly applied in Vista that it has the potential to ruin the multimedia experience altogether.

go for vista basic. You get DX 10 and no bull that you wont need like aero, and media center. Plus xp will not be supported soon.

substantially???????? not in most peoples books. 3 - 5 fps is not exactly substantial. you will find that most (practically all) driver issues are fixed. and that vista is perfectly fine for gaming

anything above an 8800gt/old gts will run dx10 all right. plus you may as well save yourself $100 and get vista, instead of xp now then in 3 or 4 months getting vista anyway.
