open your windows xp in safe mode then... Check
your startup folder (Start Menu > programs >...)
If there is any suspicious program...

2nd, open msconfig.exe, and check if there's any program
    opening the folder (startup tab).

Third, open the registry goto "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon"

Some viruses invades your computer by using this registry...

If you're a beginner, just boot at safe mode and scan your pc
via any anti-virus. I normally scan my pc using the old mcafee DOS engine
manually using updated DAT files. but you can do it using any anti-virus
such as AVG. my windows vista machine, using AVG+Vista is great.
