I put Windows XP Pro SP2 on my Dell XPS 1330 laptop. I didn't have a new copy available and I wanted to see if it would work so I just used the OEM CD that I had used when I built my desktop. I used the same product key that I had used for the desktop. The install has gone well and everything that I want to work is working. On a whim I decided to try activating it over the internet. It allowed me to which totally surprised me. Why did it let me activate it? I've been using that copy of Windows on a totally different computer for years.

Since it is working, and since I am no longer using the desktop I am tempted to just keep using it. Is there anything wrong with that?

I'm sorry...but you cannot use an OEM license on more than one PC (and that license can never be transferred after first activation).

Maybe MS decided the OEM copy was never activated...? Either way though, you are lucky...and thread closed.
