Okay, I'm getting a Rizeon JHL90 laptop. I intend to use Ubuntu primarily, with XP Home for gaming.

The thing is, I still have an old XP Home SP2 disk*from my old Desktop. Will I be able to install this on my laptop, too?

*It's an OEM version, since it explicitly states "For distribution with a new PC only" - if that makes a difference at all.

If it's been answered already, sorry. Link appreciated. :)
    (I'm searching ATM anyway)

    - thanks anyway

If that old XP Home SP2 disc came with the old desktop, then its serial won't work with your new laptop....
Have a look at this thread....

If the desktop was unbranded then it probably will work. OEM versions of windows are available for system builders at a fraction of the full retail price. The big names (Dell, HP. .... ) get even lower prices because the installer has been set to only work on their hardware.

However, I'm not sure of the legalities of transferring an OEM licence from one machine to another. You will have the check the small print.

    Urgh... how will I know?

"For distribution with a new PC only. For product support, contact the manufacturer of your PC."

"Do not lend or make illegal copies of this software."

    "Includes Service pack 2
    Version 2002"

It's just in a paper wallet, no documentation or anything.

The original desktop was a custom build from a tiny 2-man business - Computer components/repair etc. kind of gig.

You can try it out, unless the serial key has got tied to the motherboard....As OEMs are non-transferrable..!!

Well the thing is I don't have the laptop yet, hence the question - should I order it with or without XP Home SP2. :p

If I went with no OS, it turned out that it wouldn't work, I'd be kicked in the nuts and have to spend £200+ on a new licence. ¬¬

Get it with the OS, or you can buy XP PRO SP2 OEM online for $100-120....

There should be an End-User License Agreement, colloquially known as a EULA, buried somewhere in the system files on the old drive from the desktop. Stick it into an external enclosure, hook it up to a functioning system, and then search for a file with a name like "eula.txt" - that should be the specific license that governs your rights vis-a-vis the copy of XP2 installed on that drive.

I found it and it is indeed one-system-only.

    Thanks :D
