    Well not really...

I get good fps playing in a window... I can even surf while playing a game in flip 3d... It only stops a little bit, I swear!

It's as if they designed Vista not to play one game well, but to play multiple games in a window...

Why this is, I don't know.

Actually, I've figured it out. Vista doesn't have ram loss when you play games.

The reason why games run slower is because of the added stuff.

    I'm wondering...

Well, if you play in windowed mode, Aero is still running, right? That would contribute to poor performance.

Somehow doesn't surprise me. What do you get if you mix two badly-written, half-functional pieces of software, both of which want to control your computer to the fullest extent possible? :)

Actually, they have done something like that (a bit more abstract, but still)

They've virtualized the GPU, so it is now controlled 100% by the OS, and each app that uses it only gets a "virtual GPU" (like apps only work on virtual memory, and the real physical memory is handled by the OS)
And yes, that makes it *much* easier to share the GPU (which is handy because Aero wants the GPU as well). It also introduces overhead when only one app needs the GPU.

I hadn't expected it to have as much impact as you say,but that's probably the explanation.

    Eh?

Well considering that Steam really wasn't designed on Vista I'm not surprised..

As for the two badly-written, half-functional pieces of software part, you really have to cut Vista some slack (not necessarily Steam :)); it seems like you never stop bashing even though it is still in its early stages.

We know you don't like it at all and we know that it doesn't fit your needs.. You are entitled to your opinion but there is a point where it crosses the line and becomes somewhat annoying... most vista discussion threads almost always have a post of yours in it that bashes Vista. Just tone it down... plz?

On the contrary. It is precisely because it is in "its early stages" that I call it half-fiunctional. And it is precisely because it is half-functional that we're talking about it being "in its early stages".

Your argument makes absolutely no sense. By that logic, we shouldn't say that Doom3 doesn't run as well as HL2 on low-end systems? Because after all, we have to cut Doom3 some slack because it's running on a less scalable engine? :D

Dunno. Do you have a more valid point to make? Because while bashing Vista may get repetetive, at least it is on topic. Saying "I find your opinion annoying" is not on topic.

And pardon me, but when we have a thread about problems running a program under Vista, how exactly is it wrong of me to say there are problems running a program under Vista? Perhaps you shouldn't read this thread if you didn't want to hear people say that there are problems running Steam under Vista. Just a suggestion. ;)

Stop making sense, Jalf! It screws up fanboyism! Microsoft can do absolutely no wrong, because it's a large corporations driven solely by stockholder desire to profit off of entrenched monopolies, instead of being forced to care about their products!
