    Hi, im using a HP NC8430 (2GHZ Core duo, 1GB ram, X1600 256mb GFX, 5400rpm 80GB HDD)

When i try to start word 2007 (or any office 2007 program) it takes a long time to start (30-40 secs). My system is defragged and it shouldn't take that long. My Hdd is only 5400rpm but that should only slow it down 20% max?

So is there any way i can make it load faster?

    Thanks

    what OS are you using?
if u are on vista... then 1gb RAM is your problem, you need more.

If you are on XP, then look at the processes running in the background, mayb that is where your problem is.

im on XP and have about 55 processes running, but THAT it isn't slowing down the CPU because my Super PI scores are normal for this CPU

I used to have that problem and found norton anti virus tried scanning the document everytime I opened one. Disabled it and now it loads in seconds, even on my old Centrino 1.7 ghz 1 gig ram sony.

AVG shouldn't do that, though. Can you open up your task manager, and watch it while Word starts, see if any process jumps up in CPU usage, other than Word?

Try using the disc to repair Office. See if it's any faster after that.

And/Or do a reg clean. etc: etc:

    Office shouldn't start up slow

system idle process stays at 95+ CPU usage during the whole startup but the total cpu usage is always less than 10%

AVG would do that because it is requested by word to do it. I noticed it today when I started word. I haven't had time to play with the settings, but I am sure you can disable that in the word/office settings.

    damaged document template?

    Start > run
    type
    winword.exe /a
(you must insert the space before the /a)
    <enter>

Does it open faster? This is word in safe mode.

If it works, it usually means damaged extension or word template.

If it opens quickly now, search for and delete normal.dot

If that does not work, Start > run
    regedit
    <enter>

    navigate to
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version number\Word\Data

Right-click the Data folder and select Edit

    Rename the folder to OLDDATA

    Close the registry

    Reboot

    Try Word again.

If Word now works, you can go in and delete OLDDATA (a new data key will have been created). If Word does not work at all, go back in, delete the newly created DATA key, then rename OLDDATA to DATA again.

running with winword.exe /a made it start almost instantly! But i could not find normal.dot, where should it be?
Also what would be the equivalent files/commands for Excel, Powerpoint and OneNote
    Thanks a lot

EDIT: ok i found the word normal.dotm in application data and every time i delete it word starts up quickly, but after the first start up, word starts up slower until i delete that file again.

If you went into the registry and renamed DATA to OLDDATA as directed and that did not fix things, report back with the following

Start WORD and in the top menu choose
Tools > Options > File Locations

Note the STARTUP PATH (should be something like: C:\Documents and Settings\profile\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP)

    Any files in there?

    The olddata thing didn't work.

Its office 2007 so theres no "tools->options" but i found the startup directory and i realised that i have justwrite office installed for my wacom tablet. So in that folder i have jwpack.dot
I found an update for JWoffice (big improvement on the software btw) and it starts a little faster but i guess this software is what is slowing it down.

Is there anyway to make a new shortcut for word that will always start with "winword.exe /a" for when i dont need JW office?

I deleted the startup files for Excel because i dont use JWoffice for excel and that starts quickly now. but i cant find where the startup files for powerpoint are. in the powerpoint directory there are just 2 .pcb files

I thought you said only Word was slow to start?

To create a new shortcut, right click on the desktop, choose NEW SHORTCUT, browse to your Office directory and select Winword.exe then put the /a OUTSIDE the " marks (...winword.exe" /a)

In powerpoint, you click ont he window office orb in the upper left, choose POWERPOINT OPTIONS on the bottom.

There is no start up directory, but jwoffice may have included an extension or add-in. Add-ins are available to see in the Add-ins section, but to disable or remove them, you need to go into the TRUST CENTER

Same thing happened to me on a laptop with Vista 32 on dual core, 2gb. AVG antivirus.
I had office 2007 with Project 2007 installed.
Word and Project took forever to start - up to 5 minutes.
I spent 2 days trying to find the reason and tried all sugestions - deleting normal.dotm made Word start fast but only once. It made no difference for Project.
In safe mode ( /a option) Word was starting fast but there is no such option for Project.
I created another user profile, reinstalled about 3 times without any result.

    Finally found reason:
Watching the task manager processes noticed the Norton antivirus was starting!! For Word is was stuck on scanning Normal.dotm, and for Project on another file.
Norton was preinstalled and removed earlier with regular unninstall option but Norton internet security was stuck under add/remove programs.
There was no service or process active (msconfig - clean) and nothing in task manager until Word or Project was started.
Downloaded Norton Antivirus Removal Tool and ran it - all problems went away.
