How hard is it to remove Vista from a new laptop and install Windows XP?

As for the OP, it can be tricky if you dont know what you are doing. By the fact that you are asking if it is hard, i would assume you dont know, so i would just leave it alone ;)

OK, I ask this question because I've never uninstalled Vista before (not because I'm an idiot... but thanks for assuming). I have the XP drivers.

No one said you were an idiot. You assumed that I assumed that you were an idiot.

A person should not install an OS by themselves if they don't know what a driver is. Better?

There are several threads on it. You could try searching. Not trying to be mean, just saying.

Yeah, get an XP OS cd and stick it in. Then get the drivers CD and pop it in there. Done.

If you're smart, search for the million threads out there on this

I'll look elsewhere for advice. Seems the crew in here is spending too much time on computers and not enough time developing social skills... but I'm sure you've heard that before. :D

lol, you stick in the XP cd, and reboot, It'll give you options on whether to format, or just install. I'd suggest a format. Just follow the instructions on screen and you'll be done in no time :)

I can confirm this. When I installed XP the only (minor) hassle was to use n-Lite to slipstream the SATA drivers. After that installation and customization took half an hour.

TO the op, find the drivers for your laptop on the internet (->google), slipstream as many as you can on the XP CD with n-Lite (->google) and then, after installing add the few drivers left behind and your apps.

That's all there is to it.

If you want to wipe your whole HD you could use Darik's Boot and Nuke:

    http://dban.sourceforge.net/

It's not necessary, but if I was in a similar situation, I'd do it for kicks. After you run this program it will be like you have a clean, new HD. Well except for the fact that it's not new.

As a side note. The reason why some are telling you to search is that these kinds of questions are raised fairly frequently. I'm guessing they just get tried and of giving out the same advice week after week when I search would give you the needed info. Image you were in a mall and people kept asking you where the food court was when there was a directory right next to you.

I have a dv9720us HP Laptop with AMD Turion, Nvidia GeForce 7150m, 2 GB RAM, Broadcom 802.11b/g Bluetooth WiFi, Conexant HD Audio, Nvidia Ethernet.

I have found drivers for the ethernet, video, card reader and have downgraded to Windblows XP Pro SP2. I have talked with HP till I'm blue in the face and just wanted to know component make and models, so I could search for drivers. HP after nearly two days on the phone were unable to get me the information I need to completely load my "NEW" laptop back to Windows XP. When asked to support it, they said, "HP does not support laptops built for Windblows Vista that are backgraded to Windblows XP" However, they state not to return it to the dealer, but to contact technical support.

I've been an OEM Microsoft reseller and also registered gold partner with Microsoft for over 15 years. Can anyone out there help me get this dv9720us laptop running smoothly on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2?

The reason for the rollback, is I'm a computer technician and programmer and the camera's I sell from DLink are not compatible with Windows Vista and neither is the software that I've written and are currently supporting. Any and all assistance would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Michael

PS I have read the sticky notes and NO HELP

If it helps any, when I first contacted Dell about downgrading to XP, they first said it would not work... then two additional people said I would be fine. No problem. When I called to ask about drivers, they said said the same thing that HP said, "We won't support your software because you installed XP."

A couple people posted detailed instructions about drivers for Dells on this board, so you might check the HP board. Which drivers are you looking for?

As long as you have xp drivers it is very doable.

Put xp drivers on sd card or cd or usb for easier install.

Did clean install of xp on acer laptop that had vista home prem.

    uummmm

everyone assumes, but remember, vista lives on C:, so you need to format C: and install xp....--> you may want a second partition, maybe not. Many pc have a recovery partition--> you can delete/format it if thats the case.....

    I know it's obvious, but..............

The only problem I found with putting XP on a new dell is that my WUSB doesn't work. Dell never made XP drivers for it.

Doesn't matter to me though, I never use it.

So your factory disks do not work?
    XP:
Sounds like an AHCI thing. Go into BIOS (F2 pressed repeatedly at 1 s intervals after the first screen until a BLUE image opens) and look for AHCI all over. Don't change ANYTHING else. If for some reason you think you accidentaly changed something else, hit escape until propmted "exit wihout saving changes?" and hit yes.(Y)
In BIOS look for that AHCI option and disable it.

VISTA: you need to delete the older partition and re-format it .

I did this just yesterday and it's as easy as toasting bread.

First you pop in the XP CD, run the setup to boot from the CD. Delete ALL the partitions (there might be three of them) so that you can have one big partition on the HDD to install the fresh copy of XP on. Do a regular full Format and install XP.

Second phase of the installation process is to go to the Computer's Manufacturer's Website...(In my case, Dell) and search for the Drivers. Just be sure to select the correct model computer or enter the serial number and MAKE SURE you select the Windows XP option after. You most likely will only need the NIC Adapter (Network), Video, and Sound Drivers.

Most likely you would not have the NIC installed to get on the Internet with that same computer so you may need to use another PC to go to the Manufacturer's website and download and save the drivers on a external HDD or USB Flash Drive. Then transfer the drivers to the new XP computer.

    Cheers!
