    Hey guys.
I've just purchased the Samsung rc512-so1 which has windows 7.

I can't windows update!! Every time it would tell me to restart the laptop. I've heard this a common problem on this laptop. But can't figure out how to fix this problem.

    Any help would be great.

Open windows update and select View Update History.

    Which update is failing exactly?

The WIndowsupdate log file in c:\windows may prove useful when trying to figure out what is going wrong.

Just a shot in the dark, but WU fails if your date and time isnt set correctly. You mentioned you just got the laptop so you may want to double check that it's set correctly. I had this issue with one or two customer computers (they were set fo Janurary 2010 instead of 2011). Also, does WU give you an error code? That would help us diagnose your issue.

    - There is no update history. The page is just blank.

    - the date is correct.

    - When I check for updates, I get a message "windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart the computer."

I always get this message. Don't think there is a problem with the service.

Also I might have to return my laptop because it has the i7 sandy bridge processor. Don't want to go thru the hassle of the recall.

OK if it says the service isnt running, then that's exactly what it means. open your Run dialog box, type in services.msc and scroll down to Windows Update. Make sure that service is enabled, and that its running before you run windows update. Reboot after you enable it, it then should be running under its status. I don't know how it got disabled, but if that's the message that it gives you, then the WU service isnt running and looks like it was disabled somehow.
