Windows update keeps popping up telling me that I have a update. Its something about a vulnerability in the XML core or something of that nature. I thought it was several small updates at the beginning of the day (first day with the machine) but after about 50 or so goes at it I checked what was going on and realized that it is repeating the same update over and over again. It doesn't appear to be hurting anything but any little system tray icons I can get rid of will make me happy seeing as I have 14...

Yes... windows update is looping. What I mean by this is:

    1. I install the update by clicking the little yellow shield
    2. It installs and I go on with my business
    3. Within 5 minutes it is back and it is the SAME update

The update in question is KB927978, an update that deals with a vulnerability in XML or something. I have tried shutting down and letting it install right before shutdown. I have tried installing using the online windows update through IE. I am out of ideas.

This along with my inability to figure out how to turn on the built in microphone are the only problems (if you can even call them that) I have had with my new notebook.

I would check Microsoft's website and see if they have anything on this issue. Perhaps you have a corrupted update install that is causing this issue. Try removing it via the Control Panel (Add/Remove Programs). Otherwise something like CCleaner may help if that doesn't do the trick.

As for the microphone--the HEL80 does not have a built-in microphone. It has a microphone input jack next to the headphone jack.

The update process is 2 part: 1st you download the update to your laptop, then you install the updates you downloaded to your laptop.
I think in your case, the updates have just been downloaded to your laptop and have not yet install. There a small icon tell you to install the updates. If you dont install it and turn off the laptop you may have to redownload the updates again.
And I think there a lots of update for 1st updates, and the update may be appear with the same name at 1st but it's different.
I think you should wait sometime in the updates process.
Hope this help, good luck, Happy New Year.
Btw, what is your laptop, just curious :D

    I've got a HEL80 from powernotebooks.com :D

I'm 99% sure its the same update. I have installed it, many times. I have done the online installation and I have done the installation during shutdown. It leavs the log files on my disk but still refuses to go away. Something has to be failing during installation because I just checked and it is not appearing in add/remove programs.

The update does not appear in add/remove programs which leads me to believe that it is not being installed correctly. Where is the update downloaded to so I can remove it and get it to re-download.

I'm pretty sure my hel80 does have a built in mic. It is listed in the specs on powernotebooks.com

    http://powernotebooks.com/specs/PowerPro/l8-15.php

I think I see it at the top of the screen near the camera.

Search the update name in the Microsoft pages and see what you can find. As an example: my .NET 1.1 framework install almost always goes wrong until I delete some keys in my registry as per MS's instructions.

Just to make sure--have you checked the box that would make all the installed updates visible in Add/Remove Programs?

You're right about that. I forgot all about that and the specs only list a mic in. I've never tried using it though, so your best bet is to check out the user manual (on your drivers CD) or give Powernotebooks tech support a call. They're very good and should be able to help you out with setting it up.

Ok got it fixed. Here's the solution for future people with this problem. I had to download the actual installer from the IT professionals section of the knowledge base page that covered the vulnerability. I was then able to use this to remove the corrupted install of the update that would not appear in the add/remove programs list even with "show updates" checked. I was then able to do the install from the windows update system tray icon. It asked me to restart (first time it had done this). Upon restart the icon was gone, the update was successfully installed and it didn't come back. Thanks for the help
