    Hello

I'm new here and I, errrr..... really know nothing about computers. I have been uninstalling some programs which I thought I never used. After that neither windows movie maker nor windows live movie maker works. RealPlayer works fine. I use live movie maker and want it back badly. I must have uninstalled something essential for it.
I took off empowering technology and have a feeling I shouldn't have. Now I can't even find the disc that came with laptop. What do I do now?

i'd uninstall it completely via the control panel, and then download/install it anew from here--for movie maker that is.

    Thanks.
Funny, I can't actually find it on the list through control panel, is it a part of a package maybe?
I thought I should give more details- the program works, only it tells me it can't open the file because the file is incompatibile. So that might mean it needs them little things that help things to work- driver, right?

Oh, only now when you asked I went to check and there are some that are still WMV and would you ever guess they work just fine. Most some0how turned into MP4. How did they do that? Ok, so, I guess it's not the program's fault. How do I change them back to one of the formats that can be worked by this program? And how did I manage to change them?

right click on one of the ones you want to change and click open with. somewhere in there it should have wmv and just click it as default player and then hopefully it should change them all. been a long time since ive used wmv

i would also recommend you try vlc player. plays almost everything and has much better codecs included VideoLAN - Official page for VLC media player, the Open Source video framework!

I've tried that, open with, and it couldn't o[en with it. I could before I was messing. I had VLC, I'll check if I still have it. It's just that I'm used to doing things in WLMM and can do it quick, and what's worst, my hubby isn't very adventurous with programs and doesn't like getting used to different things. Also that format is accepted for dowloads on advertisements and such. I don't want to uprade the program till I get newer laptop and newer system, which is on the cards.

I still have VLC, and it works, but it's not really for editing though, is it?

i will try to explain but it can get a little complicated so i will miss out the framerates and rendering etc :D

are all your video clips from the same source, ie a video camera or digital camera.

just for example i done a test for another member about a year ago asking for advice about the same thing.
i had a 5 minute video which i converted into the 3 main video file types.
mpeg2 was 300mb in size. mpeg4 like yours above was 411mb in size and H.264AVCHD which was 619mb in size. the only difference is high definition quality in the larger file sizes. i guess the same 5 minute video in WMV file would be about 100mb

the easiest thing for you to try is this. make a copy of the mpeg4 video file (always make a copy and use that to play about with when trying out new tricks or software as you will always have the original if the copy goes wrong).

firstly try this website > Convert Files - Free MP4 to WMV converter. Free online video converter.
you can upload the file and in left drop down box scroll down to mpeg-4 and in the box on right click on windows media video file (wmv)
convert it and then try playing it. if it opens and plays in the same window as it used to then your sorted. if it wont open or doesnt play you might need to download the software program again from mattcheau's link in his post above.

you can also find a few video's of how to convert on google here > Google

    hope that (sort of) helps

    forgot to add
you can also find some other free editing programs here on google http://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&suge...f8971734a1165e&bpcl=38897761&biw=1650&bih=913

whenever you want to become a pro at editing i can highly recommend power director 10 or 11 from cyberlink (not cheap though) http://www.cyberlink.com/products/powerdirector/introduction_en_GB.html

    OK..... What's going on here?
It's not converting it. Both files, the ones that remained wmv and those that are mp4 are from the phone. Hm. It could be that the ones that are wmv are earlier ones, that I uploaded from the phone before I was messing around, and the ones that don't open are afterwards. Perhaps I should try converting online directly from phone. But I wonder what have I done....

Thanks for other link too, when I et second laptop I'll want to get better program.

Hm. When I try to convert online straiht from the phone it says file type not supported. And it's extension is MP4
But I dowloaded one of the advertised converters there and it did convert, only it said it was inactivated version so it was with watermark. Might try to finddifferent converter to download.

Ok, downloaded different converter and that sorts it. I still wonder what did I do so brilliantly to mess things up. Thank you for being patient with explaining such simple things, it was important for me to get it sorted. Thank you for the link to the other program, I'll keep it for later.
