So I bought a netbook that came with windows 7 starter. I opted to change the OS to linux, but to my great disappointment, found that basically all linux OS' (at least Ubuntu, Mint, and Jolly) don't allow netbooks to hibernate/suspend properly. So I'd like to go back to windows, and preferably XP, but I don't have a disk/iso. Is there any free trial version I can download and then buy a license key?
    Thanks!

I don't think there is a free trial version of windows XP where you can download legally. Windows XP gives you a 30 day period to enter your product key, but to my knowledge, there is no "free trial" disk/iso. You will have to buy a copy of XP. Essentially when you buy XP, you are buying the Product Key.

Nope, there's no real free trial of XP, unless you use it unactivated as indicated above. Depending on the netbook, if it came with Windows 7 Starter, XP drivers may not be all that great (meaning a hit on battery life, among other difficulties).

You may want to post in the Linux subforum. There's plenty of people using Linux derivatives on their laptops, with hibernate and suspend. Xubuntu 11.10 works just fine on my Averatec, with suspend. I actually have never tried out hibernate, so I can't speak to that.

Retail XP SP3 discs will install without a key for 30 days.
    This is only retail discs.

SP3 versions will work for 30 days unless key is entered.

Free to download is a relative thing. MSDN subscription isn't free (but if you have valid subscription, then you have license keys too).

Wow, thanks for all of the help! And sorry I didn't post this in the right sub-forum. I didn't see "XP and Vista" until today.

I'll definitely see what I can find there, because if I can use Mint on my laptop and have either suspend or hibernate work well, I definitely will.
