My computer has become slow at startup. It seems to take twice as long to boot. I have outlook and IE 6.0 starting up.

The following items are in my System Configuration Utilit "Startup" tab. WHich things are not necessary:

    smtray
    atipaxx
    ICO
    ashDisp
    jusched
    realsched
    qttask
    iTuneshelper (probably don't need that)
    ctfmon

There are two checked boxes with no description next to them. The location is the same folder as the others HKCU/Software/microsoft/windows/currentversion

Ok. I used common sense and looked up all of the items on the internet and determined I don't need most of them.

What about the two items that don't have a description, or command. The location is :

    HKCU/Software/microsoft/windows/currentversion

General advise : Run CCleaner and Spybot or any other malware remover.

I run Avast antivirus. Does that do the same thing as Spybot?

No. Anti-virus is not technically anti-spyware (although lots of programs/suites do both.)

Ccleaner gets rid of unused/dead files, registry entries, etc--lots of junk that slows down your system.

Avast is an anti-virus. Spybot is an anti-spyware/adware/malware program. I'm unsure if Avast removes spyware too or not..

    LAST QUESTION:

Does Spybot and CCleaner do different things?

I am running all sorts of crap constantly. I am tired of it. What about Adware? Does that do somethig different than Spybot?

Spybot removes all spyware/adware/malware. CCleaner is basically Crap Cleaner :p So yeah... those two should cover you pretty well.. :)

    Use Superantispyware, much better IMO.
    And yes it removes Adware.

    My question wasn't clear.

What about Lavasoft Ad-Aware? Does that do the same thing as Spybot?

My head is spinning at this point with all these f*cking programs.

Ad-Aware just cleans up adware AFAIK. But Spybot manages everything. Just stick to Spybot... it has a good history and reputation.... keep it regularly updated though. :)

Ad-aware, Spybot and SuperAntispyware, are all antispyware/malware/adware apps. Their purposes are similar though people will argue about which is best. I've read for years that Windows machines should have two such programs installed, because no single program can catch all the malware you might pick up surfing the Net.

Avast is an Antivirus app, and the poster above was saying he was unsure whether it also scans for and removes spyware/adware; some AV suites do so.

CCleaner is different than all the above - it's an app that cleans your machine's cache, history, cookies, leftover junk files, etc (there's actually a lot more to this program which you'll probably find useful, too).
