My friend is using vista and called for help. He said that When he logged on that the background was black and none of his icons were showing. He said that he could move his mouse but could only go to all programs. I told him to call emachines and I would call him back when I get a answer here. I never had this problem so I dont know what to do really.

If your friend can see the boot screen then I suggest he try and put it into safe mode (F8). See if the machine will boot and if he gets a screen. If he does then it's probably a video driver issue.

If he see's no boot screen or can't access the BIOS screen then it sounds like a faulty flat panel or a video card.

You mean the desktop has no icons?

Right click the Desktop -> View -> Show Desktop Icons.

To eliminate the possibility that explorer.exe is not working, try restarting the process with Task Manager. It may be a virus.

I had this problem, ask him if he had installed any new programs. I had installed Sony Ericcson PC Suite, when it did that but that was before they had updated the software to be compatible with Vista.
