I have been using XP on my crappy laptop for about 4 years now but now that I am getting a new laptop (Sager NP9850) I am going to be using Windows Vista for the fist time and I am sure that eventually I am going to be using Windows 7 but I have a few questions:

What does Windows Vista/7 have to offer?

What are the improvements over XP?

And should I upgrade from Vista to 7?

    Thanks in advanced.

They both offer 64bit variants, generally, i'd say the only improvement over xp is that vista has more of a modern look, eye candy, and of course a choice of 64bit.

I would say you should upgrade to vista, but make sure you go 64 bit, it is the future. I think you should be eligible for a free windows 7 upgrade.

All I know for sure is that W7 is worth using. Not having used Vista much myself, I can't say much about it though.

Vista and 7 are all very good options for more powerful computers with a lot of system resources. On my quadcore computer, it runs faster than XP according to some benchmarks and as well as everyday ussage.

Vista runs faster and gives better battery life than xp. all you need to do is remove all the junk the OEM bundles and stop having OCD over how much RAM your PC is consuming. Mine ran 2GB just as fine as it ran with 4GB.

Windows 7 is very efficient and very fast.

Windows 7 has less bloatware than the other OS's which means your system runs smoother overall... it also has a 3D booster which in fact does help with games, running games much better than Vista...

    uhm? no?

all it has is a software dx9 emulator if you have no dx9. but that is not fast, nor helping any games on any todays systems except maybe a netbook (and there, it would be so slow that it won't help).

    so, no?

"graphics accelerators" are common since years, you have two of them in your laptop in SLI. and they work equally well on vista, and xp, and even, well, what ever you get a driver for.

so, again, what do you mean? win7 is no better for gaming than vista, except if the game supports dx11, and your gpu supports dx11. that will be a while. there is no "magic game enhancer" in win7.

as said before, that's just a dx9 emulator and in NO way a game enhancing thing. it will never be. it will just mean that aero still works when ever the graphic driver fails in some form. for now, aero turns off, then, and the gui looks ugly.

emulating dx9 in software is VERY SLOW. it will be just a last fallback for when ever a system has no dx9 support. which is true for.. uhm.. no pc of today, not even a netbook.

You should really try the RC or maybe try to find a copy of 7600/RTM.

Vista and Win7 are the best choice for new systems. XP has difficulties working on a new computers as a lot of the technologies it was designed (and not optimized of course) to work with.

To have the most of your hardware, I strongly suggest going 64-bit.

What many people failed to see, is that Vista offers a lot at the back-end level (new kernel, new and actually good memory management, GPU UI engine, and so on), Windows 7 is all about optimization, improvements and offer a lot at the front-end feature wise.

Well because my new computer will be coming with Windows Vista, (I got Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit) but I also have the coupon for the free Windows 7 Upgrade and do you think I should make the jump from Vista to 7?

    Well, why not?
You have new feature, bug fixes, optimization, improvements and it's free, in your case.
