hope that windows vista will actually be released before the laptop becomes obsolete.

Eh, might as well get 2 gigs of RAM. And just a really good GPU. I could tell u ther perfect laptops, but I don't know exactly what your using them for. So maybe do a FAQ and we could suggest a few actual laptops.

I can't believe Windows Vista is going to require that much ram just to power it. It is ridiculous. Not even most games out need that kind of power.

Gamers should have a gig, absolutely.

At the moment, the minimum spec for XP is 128mb of ram. XP is essentially crippled with less than 512mb. Then if you're doing anything memory intensive, like gaming, you need more than that for superior performance. If I ever install Vista, I'll have at least 2gb of ram. But that's a gamer's perspective. For the average user, 1gb should be fine.

Vista will need 1GB for maximum performance - that means all the drop shadows and transparency effects. I'm fairly sure it will be doable with 512, if you disable all the pretty stuff and only do mild stuff like word processing and surfing. If you're a gamer, yeah you will need more than 512Mb, but if you are a gamer, what the hell were you doing with 512Mb in the first place? :p

Besides the RAM (which I really think, it'll need 2 GB for maximum performance) the most important thing you must pay attention is the graphics card.

But again, we're talking about upgrades so if you don't have a decent GPU then forget about the Aero effects.

It seems to me that money is more important to Microsoft than its consumers.

Again, what is your rush to get Vista? It's really a overbloated OS with little functionality of Windows XP/2000.

What version of Vista? If you want Vista 64-bit, then you need a 64-bit CPU, otherwise any CPU will work.

I would not buy anything with less than 1GB of RAM. But you might need more according to your personal needs. I know that now I can get by with 1GB of RAM, but if I had Vista that takes up so much RAM on its own, then I would need 2GB

There is a debate on whether you need a dedicated videocard; I think people on this forum said you can get by with an integrated videocard, but a dedicated videocard is better

you'll need a pretty poweful laptop ejh. Windows Vista will need at least 800mb of ram to run. But that will be very slow. Ideally you need about 1024mb of RAM. If your gaming however, you'll need more RAM! According to this article on the Inquirer, you might need more than 2GB of RAM to run FEAR or Battlefield 2 nicely. You might also need a decent processor. But excessive RAM upgrades could be a problem. Make sure that your motherboard can handle at least 1GB RAM. Vista is still a beta version however, and although unlikely, Microsoft may re-write some bits of the OS to make it more "performance efficient".

    Article From The Inquirer :

Vista set to swallow 800MB of RAM

    Memory, disk space hungry

By Fuad Abazovic in Wien: Wednesday 08 March 2006, 12:08

A CHAP who managed to sneak a peek at the Vole's internal beta version 2 of Windows 53xx informed us that, even while idling, Vista eats as much as 800Mb of system memory.

Yeah, we were shocked too, but you have to believe the screenshot below.

Memory manufacturers couldn't be happier about that, as it will make people to go out and buy more memory. Our source reported that Vista runs ok with 1024Mb of system memory but no-doubt 2048Mb would be much better.
