Hello all, since the service pack 2 became available months ago my computer has recognized that its available but fails to install it every time it tries. When it gets to installing update part 1 of 1 or what ever it sits for about 3 hours with the little hard drive light flickering and after 3 or so hours shuts off and adds a "failed" into the Windows update log? any help or ideas would be super useful, from what ive heard the service pack has a lot of fixes for bugs and what not,...

    Error Code 80073712

Hope that helps, I tried saving a version of the update and disabling all start up accept my "Windows OS" and it still failed.

I also tried downloading the "Update install readyness tool" but it still failed after that.

I believe the problem is related to some sort of issue with my 'windows store' ?

    That is what he did.

Wow. I was sure that would fix it. I'm reluctant to say this, but post your entire Windows update log (zip it up).

Had the same problem on one of my vista 32bit laptops. I must have tried to install service pack 2 at least 15 times. It would always install update 1 and 2 fast. Update 3 would crawl at 27% finally reach 100 after 1 hour and suddenly uninstall itself which took another hour or so. I did two thing and it worked so I'm not sure which was the actual solution.

    1. In services I had the software Licensing disabled so I enabled it
    2. I uninstall all security applications and just had windows firewall running.

Prior to this I had tried the registry tweaks, window readiness tool, stand alone, boot fix and none of them worked.

Gerry which log would you like?
    The update history Log?
unfortunaly its gone, I tried some other 'fix it' solutions listed from Microsoft and the log is gone.. I tried last night for three hours or so to no avail searching forums and what not for the error i am reporting and it seem this has happened to many people most of which dont ever seem to find a solution, i have read of Microsofts techs closing cases with customers on this issue becuase they couldnt resolve it.
    sad face

    in c:\windows,

    you will find

    WindowsUpdate.log

    It will be quite large.

right click on it, choose COPY, then righ click on your desktop and choose PASTE. Then right click on the file and choose SENT TO > COMPRESSED (zipped) FOLDER

Attach that file to a post

all right, this is what I want you to do.

First shut down (not reboot) your computer and allow any updates form last night to install. Restart.

We are only doing this because yesterday was Update Tuesday and I don't want to cause a problem with something non Service Pack realted. It probably isn't necessary, but let's play it safe.

Start > type in the search box
    services.msc

when services.msc appears at the top of the START MENU, right click it and choose RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR

Find WINDOWS MANAGEMENT INSTRUMENTATION. Double click it. Choose STOP button. Windows will inform you it needs to shut down some other things as well. Say YES

    Now, start > computer

    Navigate to

    c:\windows\system32\wbem

    right click REPOSITORY

    Change it to OLDREPOSITORY.

Reboot. (Windows will recreate REPOSITORY on reboot)

    Run Windows update again.

    Install Service Pack

    this was the failure message.

    ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND(0x80070002)

    any ideas?

    Thanks

Did you try the advice that I gave you? AS I said before I tried, registry tweak, boot fix, stand alone installer, windows readiness tool, selective start up, safe mode, every fix available with google and none worked. I probably had more unsuccessful installs than you're experiencing.

    1. In services.msc.... I had the software Licensing disabled so I enabled it
    2. I uninstall, not disabled, but uninstalled all security applications(firewall, spyware, antivirus) and just had windows firewall running.
    It worked.

Sometimes its the simple fixes verse trying to modify you laptop, it was for me at least.

    Give it a try.
