Is there a way to use the "Start Search" box in the start menu to find different types of files like mp3s. For example, I have some songs in D drive. i have added the folder to the indexing location, rebuilt the index, but still the "Start Search" feature is unable to find them, though the normal search option does display them which means they are in the index.

write: metallica mp3
do the same for other file types: microsoft doc etc. -
That does not seem to work.

The default setting should work for all file types unless the file area is not "indexed" - the location of your MP3 or whatever file you like. You have to add this into theindex. If somehow for any reason you indexed your entire files and still didn't work do this:
Right-click start button > Properties > Customize
Scroll down until you see the Search files options and Click Search entire index.
