Good morning - I have a Sony Vaio notebook running Vista business, yesterday I attempted a restore using the day before as a restore point, the process worked ok and took me to the password log on stage but as soon as i input my pasword i get the following requst 'Found New Hardware' Windows needs to install driver software for your video controller' I select the option to install the driver but I folllowing message 'Windows cannot find c:\windows\ststem32newdev.exe. My computer is in effect now out of service I have tried rebooting several times but I can get no further than the above screen, my warranty is out of date, at this stage I do not wish to call sony only to be held on the phone at a premium rate. Assistance would be much appreciated, could I restore through F2 on boot or some other way. The notebook like most these days does not come with any disks. Thank you in anticipation.

Wouldn't it be easier to use a live linux cd and have the newdev.dll on a usb stick, and just copy it over?

Can you do it that way?

    What laptop do you use?
If its a Vaio SZ you may want to start with the switch in Speed Mode...

    Suse 10 does.

I think at least most newer versions will, NTFS is old nowadays, so.
