Last night I shut down my laptop.. It was a normal shut down, and an hour before that I had checked for any updates, and nothing was there. Windows was up-to-date! During shut down there were no messages like 'please wait while windows configures updates.. don't turn off the power' or anything like that..

But today morning, when I turned it back on, after booting up and just before the login screen, there was a message that Windows was configuring updates, steps 1 of 3 or whatever...   Where did this update come from?? Or is this normal that some previous update decided to take a walk and was just configuring itself now???

Note - asking this because I have never seen anything like this till now... So I am wondering if something is misbehaving here.. and yes, I did a scan today morn and system is super clean.

Did anyone else come across something similar?

    Thanks in advance.

dude I was wondering myself it did it to me yesterday. I turned on my notebook and was so scared I had like a black screen for I guess like 2 min then I seen registry something something then flashback to black screen for like another min. I swear I was gonna cry but I was at starbucks and had honeys all over then I finally got congifuring update 1 of 3 or something like that then I just played it cool cuz of the babe with the cute nice boobs sitting across from me doing her studies. But yeah I feel better it wasn't just my system although the day prior to that when I got home I powered up my notebook then went straight to the toilet to take a leak hoping that when i came back my notebook would already boot to windows desktop but when I came back I had powerlights and everything on but my screen wasn't functioning I tried moving the mouse and hitting the keyboard hoping the screen would light up and nothing I swear I was gonna cry. anyway bye.

    UPDATE:

By the way people I forgot to mention this... Before this mysterious update, my Windows Update had an Update for itself... and this happened automatically too... There was a notification and I clicked on it and it said its recommended to check for new updates (which I do anyways) and I did it, and got an error saying Windows Update cannot update... I did the 'try again' and this time it said Windows Update needs an update for itself, and that it will automatically close and open again.... I just left it to do whatever it wants to do and then it went on well...

After this was the mystery update I saw today morning, which I have mentioned in the OP.

Thanks for the digging. That might explain the problems I started having with automatic updates about two weeks ago - updates would download but not get installed - and which I finally resolved through MS support by forcing the update agent to reinstall itself.

phewww.... I never ever knew this 'stealth upating' thing being done... Wow.. first time.

Going on a bit of a tangent >> Also, few days back, apparently Skype had this major issue too with Windows Update I guess.. with system world over restarting because of some major Windows Patch Tuesday updates and resulting in Skype getting dumped with load.

Also, I just read that previously (forgot when) one such security update' resulted in many XP users losing their Internet connections... it was some KB935....

I sincerely hope this new update / update for windows update does not result in any messing around :( :(

PS., I think it would be nice if people can post any issues they are seeing following these mystery / automatic updates IN THIS THREAD itself, and we can follow it up ALL in ONE place :) Thanks for your understanding and any cooperation.

As for me, I have not had any issues as such... Only thing was I had an error with a normal check, updated Windows Update, and then checked normally... system updated.. no problems. And today morning, there was a mystery update done automatically. THATS IT. No issues as of now, everything working fine, all connections good, all systems good.

    Cheers.

MS needs to let us know b4 pulling this crap. Yes I would have let it do the update but I do not need MS doing it on their own.

Back in sixties when acid was popular, a post like this would make perfect sense. Anyway, bye.

I have had issues after several updates on or around 8/23/08. I no longer can "Check for Updates", I haven't had any updates since. I worked with MS Support and after a while it was obvious they had there hands tied due to something being hidden. I was finally able to get the problem sorted out, and it turned out that since Dell made themselves the "God Administrator” and not the user account Administrator I set up is what created the problem because the Windows Update needed "God Administrator" mode and not “Normal Administrator” mode. I found a site that helped me make my user account "God Administrator" and all is fine now. I'll post where I found the help if anyone needs it, but I don't have access to it now.

On a slightly related note, a computer I've been working on just now received the Windows Update prompt for SP1. Wow.

This happened to me 5 days ago or so. When it was about to shut down, it said something about updates and when it started up I got a installing 3of3 updates and it would just restart after that. I ended up having to reformat my pc. =/

Thanks for the info.... though those links and suggestions look pretty advanced.. and I think the average user might want to exercise extreme caution before following them :) just to be safe...

Er, from what I read on that ZDNet article...those updates were just for Windows Update itself. So, even if it did auto install itself, I really have no problem with that part of Windows auto updating itself since that's the "critical" part of Windows that determines whether I get all of my other updates.

Also, I had the same updates on my Vista laptop but no problems.

I completely agree, but when my only alternative was format c:, reload, it was nice to find a fix that wouldn't take several hours if not days.

    Good luck
