    Hi there!

My new laptop has just been ordered and i'm waiting for it to arrive. While waiting, I need to decide on what OS i'd replace the original with.

My laptop is an Asus G50VT-X6. It has a pre-installed Windows Vista Home Premium x64. Based on experience, I need to use more than Home version since I would be using it for application development.

Now, my options. I'm choosing between Windows Server 2008 (x86) and Windows Vista Business Edition (x64). These are my only options since they're the only ones i have with legal licenses.

I will be using my machine for programming (VS2008, SQL Server 2008, etc.) and for heavy gaming. I know there are differences when it comes to the use of the two architectures, but which one would give better performance?

    Thank you.

If you have any plans on gaming then you are better off with _Vista. Even though Windows server 2008 is built on the _Vista code base, you might still run in to driver issues.
Since Windows server editions come with a lot of unnecessary services and features for a home user, you might not be able to get the maximum performance out of it for gaming and multimedia tasks. I use Visual studio on mine, and I have used SQL server express edition for few small projects. They work fine on _Vista (I have ultimate 32bit). So I'd say get _Vista business.

I agree with PhoenixFx. If you absolutely want the best of both worlds, why not dual boot? :D
