    Hi
    I currently am running Windows 7 RC (32bit version) on my old Ibm Thinkpad PC. I just received a new Sony Vaio VGN-FW 490 equipped with Vista Home premium 64 Bit. I've determinied that I want to keep Vista on my new machine until my free upgrade to Windows 7 arrives in october. Can I safely use Windows Easy transfer to move my documents and settings from my old Windows 7 32 bit PC to my new Windows Vista 64bit Vaio?
    Thanks

    According to the Microsoft help on Easy Transfer, it's for transferring from XP/Vista to another Vista computer. It makes no mention of Windows 7. You might want to go to the Windows 7 Microsoft forum and ask.

    * Edit *
    Both Vista and Windows 7 have Easy Transfer, so I guess you can just give it a shot and see if it works. Even if the settings don't transfer, at least your data should.

    Thanks. I'm somewhat confused by "settings". Why would I want to transfer settings that were created for a much older PC and a different OS?

    Those settings are for installed applications. If you have Office installed, it's a lot easier to transfer your custom settings to the new machine than create them again from scratch. Install Office on the new machine, then use some magic (I don't use Easy Transfer, so I don't know how to do it) to import them.
