i recently switched from windows 7 to windows 8.1. all my files in windows 7 were backed up everyday using the windows Backup and Restore function in windows 7 to an external hard disk drive. i did a clean install of windows 8.1 so all my files on my laptop from windows 7 is gone. my question is, how do i restore my backed up files from my external hdd in windows 8.1?

You're not clicking the WindowImageBackup by chance? That holds an image containing the entire system. You don't want to use that one, it was the windows 7 image.

Is there another folder named what your previous computer name was?

I see maybe; scroll down on that page and try option two:
Backup - Restore Files and Folders from in Windows 8

It shouldn't be a problem, just have to figure out the navigation.

EDIT: Select another backup to restore files from then navigate to the set you want.

yes, its not letting me install any files from the previous OS. only files that it will let me restore are the files that windows 8.1 backed up almost a week ago.

Sorry, don't know anything about this. I back stuff up by manually copying directories I want to back up to an HDD...crude and inefficient, but I can get back the documents with a Win8 machine, Win7 machine, an OSX machine, whatever. So I'm not familiar with this particular issue or any work-arounds.

Is there a search function like win 7 had in the "START MENU"; Type Backup and see what you get, also press F1 for windows help.

The automated backup is now called "File History" and it's in Charms-->settings-->change PC settings-->update and recovery.

For what it's worth, the search function in Win8 is still in "START" just like in Win7. Hit the Windows key and start typing, just like in Win7. Not sure why all caps and quotation marks were warranted.

according to pcworld.com, microsoft took out "windows 7 file recovery" in windows 8.1.

8.1 features Microsoft removed from Windows 8.1 | PCWorld

also, windows 7's backup and restore compresses the backed up files in a zip file. afaik i can just extract the zip file. its gonna take a while though due to incremental backup. thank you guys!

No offense. Just had a moment of frustration. I'm all good now. Resuming, all systems normal.

    Cheers!!!

Well at least you figured out how to get started and get the files out. I don't know what happened to the good old user manual days. Crazy changes; although I heard that W8.1 backup was like Time Machine - so maybe a good improvement.
