My question is , is it worthwhile?
Will I lose programs currently installed (Photoshop CS6) during the upgrade?
    Will I still have a recovery environment/Partition?

    What are the risks?

It's worthwhile in the sense that Microsoft is going to stop providing security updates for systems not updated to 8.1.

You won't lose any programs or files in the process. Just download the update from the MS "app" store, let the installer do its thing and reboot your system as required, and you should be fine.

8.1 is a fairly useful upgrade overall.
    -You should not lose anything.
-If it was compatible with 8, it should be with 8.1 as well.
-I have upgraded computers with CS6 on them without issue.

While it is true that MS will require it for further updates, I can think of no reason why anyone wouldn't want 8.1.

The upgrade is fairly painless except for the seemingly extended amount of time required for it.

As always, backup of any data you would normally backup is a good idea before any major update.
(for safety... I haven't had many issues at all for this and the ones I have had were not catastrophic)

Backup everything, there is a small percentage of users that reported having issues updating to 8.1 I personally have updated three Windows 8 computers to 8.1 and all updates were entirely seamless and I haven't noticed any performance change.

Something to watch out for is to check if there are drivers in your system have support in 8.1.

Some older hardware have drivers/bios that officially supports 8.0 but not 8.1, might behave differently in 8.1.
At worst, you might have to live with MS drivers instead.

I had few cases with hardware that just released just before 8.0 release.

I'd recommend a clean install over an upgrade anyday. It usually leads to a more stable system overall.
