So I installed windows 8 on my HP laptop. Now I want to revert back to windows 7. If I do system recovery and select option to go back to factory defaults (erase all personal files), will I get windows 7 back?

If the system came with win7 and you use the HP recovery partition then yes you should go back to windows 7.
