    Hi all,

My partner has a brand new HP Envy laptop that came installed with WIndows 8.

Fairly regularly when she shuts it down or restarts it it just sit on the screen that says "restarting windows 8" for hours. We then have to hold the power button down to turn it off, after which it switches on and boots fine.

A few places suggested disabling the fast boot option (which I have done), but it hasnt made any difference.

Its not a massive issue (I think), but irritating so Id much appreciate it if anyone has any thoughts.

    Thanks in advance

    A

It seems like a registry problem. You can go to pc settings under charms-and perform a restore of your pc by clicking refresh with keeping files.Prior to it you should make a backup of all the soft ware which came with the laptop and after restoring OS manually install the softwares.Hope this helps a little.

I would recommend opening the task manager, click startup tab.

Disable one task, reboot - rinse repeat. If it's one of these startup programs, you'll know which is the culprit once it starts or reboots as it should.

Should only take a few minutes to determine....

I think it's more likely a service that's hanging up - start up items usually affect start up only, not shut down. When you open your Task Manager as Cylphid suggested, check you services as well, and see if there any there you can disable that aren't necessary (you may need to check the "Hide all Microsoft services" box).

No problem! You had the right idea, anyway. I'm running on just a few hours of sleep, so you'll likely see me operate similarly. ;)

OP - you can also try the Windows 8 forums: Windows 8 Forums

In case anyone else come across this problem im pretty certain its a conflict between Windows 8 and Norton 360 (and some other security suites). Apparently Microsoft are "aware" of it....

Haha, do I detect a note of cynicism? :p

I haven't heard of a conflict with Symantec's software and Windows 8. I'll have to look into that; thanks for the update!

Have you tried disabling Norton 360 temporarily to see if the problem persists without it?

Disabling doesnt help, but uninstalling N360 seems to stop it occurring (obviously I have reinstalled since the test)

Unless you really like 360, you might want to go with another AV. But since you have a paid subscription, that might be a pain. Have you tried contacting Syamentec about this as well?

As you say, i dont want to lose a year's sub. Also, it was Symantec who told me it was a known issue that Microsoft were working (Microsoft confirmed this).

Its not a biggie, im sure it will be fixed eventually!

They're both big companies with many software engineers/developers; I'm sure they'll get the bug fixed! Norton 360 has a huge market share too. I'm sure they won't want to lose that with so much competition in the AV market.
