So I'm really keen to upgrade to Windows 7, but a few shock messages have come up. Two owners of the same notebook as me, Forge and EIement who have both claimed to getting higher temps. EIement has seen his GPU temps rise from 46C idles to around mid 50s and his HDD have rosen to 41C from 33C. His cpu temps has also risen a bit, i cant remember the numbers but i think it was around 5C?

anyways, Forge hasn't disclosed any numbers but you get what im saying. temps across the board have risen, and i really dont want to have this problem. so im asking, anyone else having similar problems where going to win7 has increased ur temps? i dont mind 1-2C (at idles), but the numbers EIement has given me has kinda scared me.

PS. the numbers for EIement's temp mite be off, this is going off a 1 day old steam chat we had :)

Global warming might be one of the reasons. Get over your shock messages. Windows 7 is not for temperature freaks.

mine has raised too, caused by powermizer (god i have mentioned that friggen name in an awful amount of threads lately) which makes the clocks go up and down a lot even just moving a window around.. i guess nvidia will sort that out sooner or later

All those temperatures are still within range and therefore acceptable. Obsessively combing over every last degree is really a waste of your own time and effort. It doesn't matter much.

idk, i mean those are pretty significant increases in temperatures. +7C CPU/+6C GPU/+10C HDD...the reason i worry is that my temps are hot enough as is, at complete desktop idle, 45C CPU, 50C GPU, dont know HDD since RAID. if they were to raise 10C just cuz of insatlling win7, i would AT LEAST like to know why, hence the thread. its not like im going to revert back to vista, new = good. as long as load temps dont increase im fine. but really, are other users experiencing this? and why would GPU temps increase even thoguh powermizer is fully working @ its stock 200/120/1000 (for GTX 260m at least) in win7?

i have a really hot G51, that is why im asking, im no temperature who needs low temps...but unjustified temp increase from OS installation makes me raise some questions.

yea that's good to here, i just find it strange that both element AND forge got the same problem after they insatlled win7, maybe it's buggy process or something? hope i dont go to 60C gpu idles and 55C C2Q idles

Try and leave GPU-Z open, running in tray or something.

Move some windows around.. when i do that i tend to increase.. the clocks constantly goes up and down

yes i do know that windows 7 aero cause GPU clcokcs to fluctuate, but the exact problem that Eiement is facing/faced is that EVEN at stock underclocks (which i believe is 200/120/1000?) when powermizer is working, he has gotten a sudden rise in temperature. most people here have responded postively, the way i hoped it to be. i just hope that it is an isolated unlucky coincidence that both forge and EIement got the same problems when upgrading to windows 7, with the same laptop as me (different SKUs tho)...

good for you, I like keeping my system running as cool and healthy as possible. Any heat increase, whatsoever, is a mark of some sort of change in the system for the worse, and I will investigate it fully. "within range" for you, and for me, are completely different. Its ignorance like this that has slackened my time on these forums.

I've seen a lot of heat-related issues on this forum, especially given the fact that I've been around for 3 years. There's no question that heat is the number one cause of failure in laptops.

But there are some facts to keep in mind:
    - manufacturers do state acceptable temperatures for individual components, our point of contention isn't a matter of opinion
    - keeping things cool does extend product lifetime insofar as the temperatures do not cause any damage; otherwise getting cooler temps doesn't matter

As a consequence of point 2, it follows that after a certain temperature, the cooler you run a part doesn't grant any more benefits, which is exactly why I dismissed your worry over certain temperature discrepancies. Obsessively dithering over your temperatures is pointless.

By the way, I'm not ignorant just because I disagree with you.

My temps dropped a couple of degrees and I noticed that Win7 is MUCH more aggressive in throttling back the CPU. Actually, I am not sure if Win7 actully throttles it back QUICKER or that Win7 is doing lesss background processing allowing the processor to throttle back. I have a desktop gadget that shows the current clockspeed of both cores. Under Vista it took a while for the cores to settle to .8 ghz, now they reach that a lot of the time.

yea ive noticed you dont go on much, or at least dont post as much as you did. and i didnt neccesarily seek a resolution to the problem, just would like to know why/how it increased...i do understands BOG point tho, my main reason i dont "mod" my laptop, cuz warranty handle any future-problems and as long as its running fine, without error in *acceptable range* as nvidia has designed them, im ok.

Exactly how is it "ignorance" to state (correctly I might add) that the temps are still within the accepted norms and therefore inconsequential? What stikes me as ignorant is calling some one out because they don't have the same level of concern you seem to have.

no, its because he is trying to tell other people what "acceptable" temperatures for their machines are, dangerous maybe, but acceptable no. He has different standards for his hardware, I have different standards for mine. and he is IGNORANT for for trying to tell me to leave my machine where it is when there is a definite change causing a 20% increase in temperature across the board, which is unacceptable for ME. I did not ask for his opinion on what my temps were, I don't care if HE finds them acceptable. I want my temperatures back into the sub 40C range as they have been with vista.I don't care who you are- you should not tell me what I should be happy with on my machine, especially when it is substantially worse than it was prior.

Try an AMD+nVidia combo for a while and everything under 100C starts to feel just about normal :p

I switched back on my nc8430, partly because under Win7 the system was running hotter than XP. If I had installed 32bit Win7 I would have tried RMClock, I just didn't get it working under 64bit.

lol lets not get worked up on what temps are ur norm...i bet you guys would also worry a lil, i mean an unexplained increase in temps...wouldn't you draw questions? if u dont, then you are probably too lazy or dont care about your computer enough. temperature rise shouldnt occur like that, which is why i created this thread so maybe some fellow NBR users mite help me with determining the cause of the problem. for ME, if the only solution is reverting back to vista, then by god, i wont do that. as i said, im just curious...

sorry to grave dig an old thread...

after about a month of using windows 7...the problem i was hoping not to get...has come. Last week, after browsing the internet my fans just suddenly turned on and im like ", what's happening?" first i though the 195.55 beta drivers were doing it, but i've now experimented with DOX 185.85, WHQL of 186.82 and finally using 186.81 (my current drivers)...problem still persists.

EIement and Forge experienced the same thing, EIement returned to Vista while Forge kept with Windows 7, albeit using it without AERO on.

i've found in my experience that the browsing some sites, my temps can rise to 70s and when it hits 80s, my fans turn on. other sites are fine, where my GPU temps stay between 50-60C (fine in my case). when it gets into 70-88C, i get worried :(

so i ask fellow NBRers, if this is indeed a FLASH problem on some sites, besides using adblock plus (use that w/ Firefox 3.5.6), any ways i can stop flash to prevent my GPU temps from soaring? if it isnt a flash problem, i dont really wanna disable aero since...im a very aesthetic person (G51's looks played a big part in my purchase of it), i would like AERO on.

    TL;DR - temps are getting into 70s and 80s in windows 7 w/ same clocks/drivers, never happened in vista. solution = ?

If Windows 7 encourages everyone to remove Adobe Flash, that would be a boon to the entire world. If users remove flash, sites won't be far behind.

i used rivatuner to absolutely lock the gpu clocks to a clock i decided my self, and whenever i start a program that uses hardware acceleration (most games) it goes up to max clocks.. So now my gpu temps are almost always low when not playing and the clock dont rise when i watch a movie or move around a window lol..

If youre interested to do this too, let me know.. Rivatuner is great anyway, while you are at it, you can include an OSD in games that shows stuff like temp, framerate, and clocks.. very useful

Silicon is tough stuff. IT can take temperatures of 125 to 150 during use, although I may be thinking of industrial grade silicon. Even so, you should always be backing up your data, and you have some things to check. First off, are the fans even spinning?

@ 300-480-750 clocks (my hopeless try @ trying to get powermizer-like levels)

    still idling through 70-high 80s.

fan spin on @ 93C where u see the rollercoaster. from anything under 93, i can HARDLY hear the fan, as if it was on it's lowest possible setting besides being off.

going to do a 500-799-1250 stock clock run then my usual OC (585-970-1475) when i game...

furmark settings were 1920x1080, stability XTREME burning mode, 16xMSAA

update, more furmark runs, this time @ stock clocks of the underclocked ASUS G51Vx's GTX 260M.

temps hover between 100C and 101C.

    this one is at 585-970-1475...

as you can see, there isn't that much difference in max temps. temps hover similarly, as in 101C most of the time but maybe sometimes it goes up 1C, sometimes down 1C.

comments/suggestion on what i should do? it isnt running @ overclock that'll damage my laptop, it just using this laptop in general...

well, the point of this thread isnt to get apeshiz all over my max temps...totally aware of that. as u see, OC doesnt affect it much, if only...if only i could control the fans!

so...im trying to find a solution to the high non-gaming temps, o boy typing a message to david and this thing is @ 88C. well...i've tried turning off aero...and even as unpleasing as it is, it seems to have worked where i have 55C temps right now.

any OTHER solutions...btw it is rising by 1C as i type so iuno how effective turning off aero is gonna be. gonna be lame if i needa keep it like that.

    current temp = 58C GPU.

If turning off Aero drop the temperature you might want to download GPUZ and check the GPUZ throttle state with it.
You should see 2 or more clock state.
    Default clock (lowest)
    2D Clock
    3D Clock
In Windows 7 desktop with aero turn on it should revert to Default Clock otherwise it is time to change drivers.

yes, we know its a powermizer issue. with powermizer as ON it WILL downclock, but the second you move one of those shiny aero windows it clocks right back up again because for some reason win 7's DWM is triggering extra clocks. I've literally tried at least 30 different driver revisions from 179-195.62 + powermizer switch

yep, well i think...im happy with my results.

i didnt turn off aero, so i still have those nice buttons to close/minimize/maximize, winkey + tab and windows preview thumbnail (REALLY USEFUL!)...all i did was turn off the transparency in settings. so i have the color and such, just that u cant see through it.

after a day of web browsing, including this site...max temps have been like 63 which is kinda normal, even had that in vista. normal temps are 49-59.

not too happy that i lose out on the beauty of win7's transparency, but i just change the color scheme to something nice even w/o transparency and it's all good (it's slate color @ 80-90% intensity, looks..umm decent?).

here is a screenshot to see it.

well...my fix apparently didnt work. so now aero is completely off, gonna try that for a few days.

if all else fails, i will be waiting for this ticking timebomb to give out, then send it in for repair. if it lasts me the 2yrs that the warranty covers, i'll be quite happy actually.

Each time you try another driver remember to do a Registry Clean (CCleaner portable edition) so the old drivers trace will not persist.
