    Hi -

I recently bought a new laptop with Windows 7 installed. Core i5 processor, 4GB DDR3 Ram, 5400 RPM hard drive. Here I was expecting a quick boot up on a nice new PC. Wouldn't you know, my average boot up time is between 2 and 3 minutes!!! I've uninstalled all the crap-ware that came with the computer and have cleaned out my start up list. Here's what msconfig shows as starting up now:

    Intel Common User Interface
    Realtek HD Audio Manager
    Synaptics Pointing Device Driver
    Toshiba Power Saver
    Toshiba Button Support
    Toshiba Zooming Utility
    Toshiba Flash Cards
    Toshiba HDD Protection
    Toshiba HDD SSD Alert
    HDMI Control Manager
    Toshiba Volume Regulator
    Intel Proset/Wireless
    IAStorIcon
    Symantec Security Technologies
    WinPatrol Monitor

So, admittedly, I am running Symantec Endpoint, which is probably slowing things down a bit. But I was running the same program on my old Dell and had much faster boot times. I've installed and run Tune Up Utilities 2010. I've tried turning off User Account Control and Indexing in Windows. No real benefits. I even switched the BIOS to "quick boot" instead of "normal boot." I just can't seem to find a way to get this thing to start up faster. What's slowing it down so much?

FYI - the model is a Toshiba E205-S1904.

Anyone have any advice for me?

    Turn off the following:

    Toshiba Zooming Utility
    Toshiba Flash Cards
Toshiba HDMI Control Manager (Unless you use HDMI)
Intel ProSet Wireless (Use built-in Windows wireless manager)
Symantec Software (Get faster/better protection from Kapersky or NOD32, or even Microsoft Security Essentials [FREE])

Also, turn off any services you don't need to use. Optimization software is mostly useless for W7.

And finally, do yourself and your computer a favor and read this:

See my signature line for a link to a how to for defragging the boot files. For some folks it has trimmed of thirty seconds or more of boot time.
