Hi all, im downloading windows 7 rtm. but i can get a hold of a genuine retail windows 7 key. Is there is a difference between using the retail key on an RTM version as opposed to using it on the retail version.

Im just verifying so before i buy one(key). This has nothing to do with upgrading by the way. I will be doing a fresh install of it to save confusion.

    Thanks

I don't know for sure, but the RTM's in the past have been set up to use different keys from the retail versions. I would suggest getting the official retail Win7 disc, and not trying to use the RTM disc.

There shouldn't be any difference other than that the retail discs have a file in them that locks the disc to the specific version purchased so you need to use the proper key pertaining to that version.

The RTM version is not locked to any specific version of Windows 7. What version is installed is based on the key you give it.

Precisely...I am using a the RTM version of windows 7 and have activated it using a retail key. The version restriction problem doesn't really matter with the RTM downloads since you can just delete the "ei.cfg" file once you have downloaded the RTM image file; doing this will allow you to install the version that you have a key for.
