Windows 10 is broken! Time to look for a new OS?

As I stated before I was willing to give it another chance but that seems to be a fading idea. The reason is for over 1 year W10 has been broken and not only is M$ aware of it but they are doing nothing about it. Now I am not talking about all the complaints of issues we would like to see fixed but the normal internal functions of the OS are broken. In particular is file management.

If you go to settings>system>storage>(primary drive)>temporary files you are given options to delete temporary files and delete previous windows versions. Neither option works, they delete nothing and manual work around(s) seem to miss files or the system refuses to give permission to delete them.

There are people complaining of huge wasted file space. We are talking some extreme cases of over 300GB. This is not acceptable of an OS and it looks to just be an internal permission problem.

I am guessing time to go all Linux if this can not be fixed, and so far M$ has shown it can't. My patience is definitely wearing thin for sure.

    Which build do you use?

Does a clean install make any difference? I know it's not an ideal solution.

    What about disk cleanup?

Windows 7 is still an option for some.

The problem has existed through multiple build, even my new Nextbook is a clean install and it upgraded too 1511 and has issues. Since the new system was win 10 Win 7 is not a real option. Yes W7 is an option but I need all systems on the same OS and since we have to eventually leave W7 may just have to do it sooner than later. The longer I wait to change platforms to more painful the change will be.

    Disk Cleanup doesn't fix this?

I see your frustration, but at the same time I get why you're hesitating because it will involve some extra work to change OS.

Try 1607 before anything else. You're 12 days away from version 1607, aka Redstone 1. If you want to, I can update my 1607 build 14390 VM to 14393 and report back to you.
If you want me to test something specific just tell me.

this may be fixed in a future build but I have little faith. Disk cleanup does not see all the files.

Edit; a big problem I see is "system" does not give up permission for the files or directories.

My VM uses 11.2 GB right now. We'll see what happens after I update it.

There still is no solution. That is just one of the threads about it. There are suggestions on the manual removal but this doesn't clear all the files (permissions)

I deleted manually on my laptop, 180 MB were not deleted, but I think those are for an update.

Of those files you can't delete, how much is it?

There is a definite permissions issue. I went to the Windows.old and took over ownership to a local admin login. on attempting delete it kept coming back need that logins permission to delete and I was logged in as that. Now it deleted most of the files before but same here there are files that are not deleted. CCCleaner was no help either. I wont do any of this yet to my main machine, can't afford a blowup.

Edit; already blew up the Nextbook. Kept disconnecting saying it needed administration to load up the wireless service. Have to factory reset it.

Edit 2; I suspect somehow in the settings dialog or when I use file explorer when the system user is accessed to delete file/folders the username and/or paths are changed in the system and then I subsequently get services that will not restart. Again a guess the programmers will need to fix it!!!!!

Well if a clean install of 1607 won't make you happy when it becomes available then I think it's time to move on.

I don't care that upgrades are supposed to work, I've always had the most success with clean installs.

Just got done with the reset on the Nextbook. It came back version 1511 and only 6 mb in the windows.old directory. My guess is there was an update, but system again will bot by default clean up the temp as there is 161 mb there. I had to manually remove 1.5 GB after the printer driver software install. I have no faith it will clear internet ie 11 cache files either. This is not just a POS OS but there are no words foul enough for this travesty. Where are the mom's and pop's buying these 32GB devices left, my guess is returning items or getting stuck with them.

I finished the update now. The install jumped from 11.2 to 22.4 GB. I deleted the folders in Settings like you described, and it was only 1.25 MB of temporary files left after that.

Total size is now 11.4 GB.

The shortcut and cmd prompt only bring up the front dialog but clicking ok yields no further effect. My temporary files grew from 161 mb to 969 now surfing the net. By using default file explorer and disk cleanup I got that down too 854 MB. just nuts, but thanks guys............

if the new version contains the FIX they had better release it real soon. This error will break tons of those small drive SSD devices out there.

Wow, that's bad, I regularly get rid of gig's of cruft by running various junk removal tools under Windows 8.1/7/Vista.

On Windows 10 I would have left it long ago just for that reason, the ongoing collection of cruft I couldn't remove. Yipes.

Glad I never upgraded :D :p

If you have installed Windows 10 as an upgrade from a previous OS, then that could be it. These are the small quirks that can never be solved without a clean install.

It's actually funny you say that, as that is the reason people gave for many years for reinstalling Windows, to get rid of that every increasing collection of cruft on their Windows systems, to "clean" it, hence origin of "Clean Install".

Then along came the tools like ccleaner, which meant we could go for years on the same installation without that every increasing garbage being collected and stored on our C drives.

From @TANWare 's description, it sounds like MS has locked certain temp files as part of their data collection scheme, which means you can't delete them - permission denied.

It would be interesting to find out which temp files MS deems interesting enough to hold on to, report on, and possibly upload to MS servers as part of the "telemetry" collection, using the uniquely identifiable id for your hardware.

8/2 could be a long wait for some. on larger drive systems it is of little issue but these small systems could have detrimental effects. That along with others were reporting this problem well before 1511 so hopefully 1607 is a true fix.

For those who can't wait there's always the Insider Preview. The versions available now, like build 14393, are very close to the final build. This is obvious when looking at the changelog, which shows just minor changes the last weeks.

Very bad idea, used to do that on Windows 7/8 and it caused checking for updates take longer and often failed to install. Since then I just let Windows Disk Cleanup tool to take care of cleaning the updates leftovers which it never cleans the software distribution folder anyway so best to not mess around with system files IMO

So far so good with having the folder cleared out. I do leave the log text file there alone. having experienced it though I would recommend at least a 64gb primary drive in the system 32GB is too restrictive. For now though it is under control and I do not need to dump W10 just yet.

The reason I didn't try it is because I know for a fact that half the things on my laptop won't work on Linux like the FN buttons and other drivers since Clevo doesn't give us Linux Drivers. I was going to buy a laptop just for Linux a while back but scrapped the idea due to no funds at the moment

    @OP

I'm not sure if moving to Linux desktop or some other environment makes sense for your use case, but making migration decisions with this kind of reasoning is going to, well, get you a lot of trouble down the line when something on your new system doesn't work exactly the way you want it to out of the box.

Next time your Windows 10 refuses to deleted temp files and you want Linux to help, boot up a Linux system from USB and delete whatever you need to delete. It's still NTFS and Linux doesn't have to respect Windows permission restrictions.

It is not my fear of taming my current OS. I am worried about those who can't. The promise 1607 cures the problem makes me stay. If it does not then I will be disappointed to say the least.

Edit; I am slowly getting used to W10, but it has to work. I just ordered another machine for myself, the one I just got is really in the end for my daughter. The 10.1 is what I have now and the 11.6 (11a) is what I ordered for me.

I don't know if you have read good things from others than me, but don't hope to much based on my results alone. :) My test was just one single VM.

In the end, my point was that you should wait for 1607/Anniversary update/Redstone 1 because it's such a short time left until launch, two weeks is doable, and it's more or less the first Service Pack, with 1511 being more of a rollup (don't quote me on that).

This is why WinX is not having a good PR. For all it's hype it's breaking more then it suppose to fix. This Version is like a Beta in which the user of Beta WinX are it's Guinea pig for their newer O/S that will replace WinX I bet they have Win16 in the works right now and will dump 10 within a few years and those that have them MS will say good luck.

Another found issue. With the new system if I open a Word or excel files there is a 10 second delay over a power point file. My upgrade system has a delay only in excel. I have tried all the fixes but to no avail.

If you use OneDrive like I do, make sure to uncheck this box:

The upgraded system does not the new one does. I have tried even disabling one drive but it has no effect. With office 2007 on the new system it does not seem to have an offer of synching office files.

Edit; The upgraded system has Office 2010.

I had given the 10.1 system to my daughter and just obtained a new Nextbook 11a for myself. I also loaded Office 2007 to it as well and this one opens file extensions in office properly.
