    Hi,

I have an ASUS UX31E which came to me with a copy of Windows 10 on it (it was originally Windows 7). The Windows 10 has recently killed itself during an update and I cannot get Windows to load without crashing. The charger has the Windows 7 licence key on it - but with 3 characters missing due to wear (too many to guess, I suppose). Do I have any options to get this machine up and running without having to buy a new licence key?

    Thanks in advance.

Simply install the same edition of Windows 10 (home or pro) and when prompted to enter a license key, choose skip.

Since it was previously activated, the hardware is registered with Microsoft and the moment you go online it would be activated within a few minutes.

At this point since you didn't write the Windows 7 Product Key down there is nothing you can do unless you can find the Product Key. Best to ask Asus for the Windows 7 restore disk to restore and get the product key and then upgrade to Windows 10 and see if that work. Otherwise you need to find that Windows 10 Product Key so when you reinstall Windows 10 from a ISO or purchased version to reinstall Windows 10.

Phoenix is right about Windows 10.

As for Windows 7, it is possible to install and activate it if your laptop has an SLP license. Just a few extra steps after installing.

If the sticker says OEM (as in it was put there by the manufacturer, not previous owner) then SLP activation is possible.
