I would say just go with XP Pro if it doesn't cost you a penny. If they charge you more for XP Pro over XP Home, which they usually do then forget it.

You'll be fine with XP Home.

If you are getting a laptop with a tv tuner card and plan to use it as a home entertainment system then maybe consider Windows Media Center.

I'm like Shampoo. There really isn't much of a difference between the three systems.

If you want it for entertainment, then go with MCE. MCE also has the option to choose between what you want to do - play music, watch DVD, etc

If you need domain login (which most home users don't need), then you must have XP Pro because this is one primary difference between Home and Pro.

Home is the more general system or base system for the other two.

will u be using the laptop to connect to work or to use at work? if so, XP pro will definitely be a requirement at a lot of workplaces. XP MCE is built on a XP home kernal. But now that u've decided to buy XP home, if u still want MCE capabilities try media portal, an open-source software similar to MCE. its free!!!
