    I'm a bit confused about those upgrade options for Windows 7.

    I currently have Vista 64-bit Home Premium.

    If I purchase a Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate upgrade, will I be able to use it to upgrade from my Vista Home Premium?

    Thanks.

    I don't believe so. (Might be wrong :D)

    Upgrade path:
    . Vista Home Premium -> W7 Home Premium
    . Vista Business -> W7 Professional
    . Vista Ultimate -> W7 Ultimate

    cheers ...

    You should be able to upgrade to Win 7 Professional/ Ultimate from Vista Home Premium. All the upgrade offers available don't state any upgrade paths.

    More information here states that you can only upgrade to the corresponding version of Vista you have. MS sites are misleading (different info in different places).

    Apples and oranges -- the site you cite is talking about the free Win7 upgrade you get if you buy a computer between now and October. In that case it is a direct same-level upgrade and you can't flipflop around.

    Now regarding the upgrade versions you can pre-order now for a computer you already have, Microsoft says you can install the upgrade version with Windows XP or Windows 2000, but you must " back up your files, clean install, and reinstall your applications". That suggests to me that those versions aren't concerned with the underlying Vista version. After all who doesn't have a couple XP or Win2k install discs laying around? :)

    this is what I see on Asus's site
    http://event.asus.com/2009/windows7/#4

    it appears that you can't change to a "better" version;
    that would have to be done after upgrading to Win7.
    ie vista home premium upgrade to win7 home premium;
    then run the upgrade advisor to a better version of Win7.

    Indrek, thank you for the information. I am currently on Home Prem x86 but wanted to go to W7 Pro x64...now I can go and purchase the cheap upgrade :) It would have been nice for MS to just say this before...

    R u sure that Vista Home Premium can definitely be upgraded 2 7 Professional? I did not find any information related to this on the MS website.

    Please share some links regarding this information. I want to be doubly sure that this can be done before going ahead with the purchase decision.

    uppalpankaj -- see the bottom of the page here -- it says the upgrade versions can apply to XP and Windows 2000. Logically that means it doesn't require a specific version of Vista.

    If that's still not enough assurance call Microsoft and ask.

    Just got off the phone with their purchase support staff (who then asked his 'manager') and he verified XP Home or Vista Home/Premium -> Win 7 Professional is allowed, and a clean install is suggested. Sealed the deal for me. I think I will just get Pro as it has the XP mode, which right now is a decent discount. Best of luck!
