What can you use to record both the internal sounds (hearable in earphones) and the external sounds at the same time?

"external" as in ambient noise not being produced by the laptop?

Here are some quick search results: input and output audio recorder free download

I also hear Camstudio and Fraps are capable of recording both input (recording) and output (playback).

    Yes: the advice. :p

Can Camstudio also record the input and output without recording the screen at the same time?

Audacity can IIRC, and for free, but only in Windows XP and older. Microsoft removed the ability that it used to record internal sounds in Vista due to lobbying from the RIAA and MPAA. Though if you have an audio cable to loop the headphone jack back into the input jack, and the "external" sounds are recorded from, say, the webcam's mic, you can still use Audacity for this even in Vista or later. You just wouldn't be able to hear anything from the headphones while looping them back into the input jack.

It may still be able to record both without any fancy analog tricks in the most recent versions of OSX (unlikely) and recent Linux/Unix distros (quite a bit more likely).
