    Yes,guys
I need help here.I'am looking into a few IBM Thinkpad notebooks. That I like and want. But a few of them have Windows 2000 Pro installed and a few have Windows XP home or Pro installed.
Can you tell me what's the difference? And would I do badly purchasing one with Windows 2000 Pro?

I've heard something about the Media player being different.Does 2000 pro have a decent Media player?I burn and play alot of CD's on my laptops!!
    Oh,here are the thinkpads I'am looking at:T23/T30/A30

Thanks in advance for any help & advise,Clint

Well, you can't upgrade from XPH to 2kPro - you'll have to reformat.

Windows 2000 is a more stable operating system than XPH. At our office, all of our machines are Win2kP - that was the last 'great' operating system Microsoft made in many people's opinion, including mine.

Windows XP has a better media player though - I believe the highest you can go on 2kPro is WMP9.

Last I knew, XP home upgrade only worked for the "home" versions (, 98, ME) not the Pro versions (NT, 2000 Pro) of previous windows. I'm not sure how strictly that is enforced - you might be able to upgrade from 2000 to Home as long as you have an old 95 cd sitting around, but I can't say for sure. You can definitely upgrade from 2000 to XP pro.

Personally, I'd go for XP Home over 2000 Pro if you can. Most of the nice features in XP Pro (IIS, Web server, Remote Desktop server, etc) are far more important for desktops on a big network than portable computers, so XP Pro probably isn't a big need over XP home, but XP home is definitely a step up from 2000. I wouldn't let it be a big breaking point - 2000 isn't a bad OS, but XP does have a more updated media player, and a generally nicer interface.

Personally, I loved W2K. It was simple and stable. I'd load it up on my notebook if I could, but my W2K disc has a gash running through it and can't be used.

Try making a copy. I also prefer 2k. I find XP to be annoying.

It really is. The animations are dumb.

The most annoying thing about XP is that stupid animated dog when you search!

Also, WinXP added such pointless services - Portable Media Serial Number service? C'mon Micro$oft.

I'm a huge Win2K fan. My laptop came with WinXP and I've been thinking about dumping it for 2K. My desktop has 2K, been using it on all my machines, save for my lappy, for years.

I think I'll try that. I'm thinking about buying a faster HDD, which will require a fresh install anyway.
