    Why am i using more hdd space after reformat?

    when i first recieved my notebook i had 86.3gb total space and was using about 12 gb out the box. I just reformated my harddrive now it states i have 86.3 gb total and im using 25 gb of space somehow. I have installed nothing yet, im running vista ultimate btw...Can anyone explain this and tell m how to fix this?? thanks

    Did you do a fresh install or did you run the installer from inside Windows? If you did that, you'll still have all of your old windows files in a folder called Windows.Old or something like that.

    i just used the recovery disk it came with, vista ultamite was on it out the box, and always has been on it

    Yes but how did you do the installation?

    Did you follow a method where you put the Vista disk in, reboot, press f12, boot from disk?

    i used a recovery option that my alienware has. It says its suppose to return my laptop to its original shipped state but i have 12 gb of less space then my original shipped state

    Im not familar with Alienware but there are two possibilities...

    1. You performed a system restore where you may have the option to revert back. This would mean that there are files tucked away for this purpose which would be about right for that size.

    The other possibility is that you tweaked your system and got rid of bloatware etc...now you just put it all back.

    You never did a clean install which is why everyone was confused. this would have gotten rid of the recovery partitiob and all the Alienware bloat.
