This is what my laptop comsumes when idle , power save mode and screen out :

    3.6 Watt

When idle, power save mode and screen at lowest brightness :

    5 Watt > minimum screen consumption : 1.4 Watt

Idle, power save mode and screen brightest :

    7.7 Watt > max screen consumption : 4.1 Watt

Orthos stress test, high performance mode, brightest screen :

    21 Watt

Is there anyone who can get less than 3.5 Watt ?

    P.S. Lappy is samsung X360 with core 2 duo , SU9300

I think I can bring mine with Battery bar under 9W - but what you need to consider is netbook vs. ultraportable vs small and powerful (like the SZ) vs Business laptop vs mainstream vs workstation.

    What so special about this?
For me, Power Consumption must worth per Performances.
If the power consumption is low, and have good performances. I will consider it as a good 1. If not, it will be just normal or not interesting.

One word - Battery life - 1W less is worth another 30 minutes for me.

I don't know if it's so special, maybe check out if your lappy consumes less than 3.5 Watt when idle, no screen in power save mode

This is the program I used to check Wattage , you have to run the laptop on battery otherwise you will not get any data

Is that with your T61 with T7300 ?

Did you measure it with RMClock ?

Why would you measure power consumption while the screen is off? The computer isn't even usable in such a state.

Because when someone hooks to a external monitor or projector , and they turn their screen off, they would get longer battery life.

If you have an external monitor/ external projector solution available, then I see no reason to be running on battery.

This would be great if say, the screen was at 40% and had a web browser open. We can get some real benchmarks.

That's why I said "what's so special about this?".
Because Performance need to be worth per Watt.
If the Computer is unusable when low Watt, then, it's totally lame and very common. Most laptops did that too.

Well, if you think it's pointless, why post? Just let it die on its own

My brother's Mini 10v can get 3 watts during use. Granted, the screen has to be at the dimmest and the Atom must be idle, and it usually doesn't stay that low for long. With wireless card off, it's more sustainable at that power consumption.

Because I run an application that is just crunching numbers > no need for screen on most of the time..savings of at least 1.4 Watt and max 4 Watt

If you are crunching numbers then your CPU will run under full load with a 25 or 35W energy loss to heat alone - in that case you possibly won't care about 1W saved anyway - but its more than that if your screen should be readable anywhere but a dark room.

Load on CPU averages only around 7 % , very light "crunching" :)

This is bad, idle + screen at min brightness, 16W.

    How do I lower this?

No wonder why I never get more than 2 hours battery life :(

i guess by "chrunching numbers" he actually means downloading torrents over night, or so :)

at least the 7% cpu usage could very well be some form of download process.

yes, it's T61 w/ T7300. I did use the RMClock to monitor it. Temp also gets around 8-10 degrees cooler.

That's about where I usually get. A little bit lower, considering I had 5hr45min battery life possible at new (85 WHr) in ideal battery-life, so 14.5 or so. Generally 16 though, with wireless off and minimal brightness.

But I also have dedicated graphics, a T7500, and a 7200 RPM hard drive in the mix. I got battery life by getting a 9-cell battery. With one PC, I'll take performance/durability/cost first/second/third, and battery life fourth.

Now I get two hours or less unless I'm very aggressive with battery saving, but that's due to the battery slowly wearing out.

The ways I've found to increase battery life and to undervolt and underclock in RMCPUClock, underclock the video card in RivaTuner (especially the 2D mode, to the minimal supported clocks, as that's what you'll be using on battery unless you're like me and play 3D games on battery), and disable wireless/bluetooth/DVD in BIOS or with a wireless switch.

Screen turning-off isn't real practical in most uses, but it's good enough when I'm using my laptop as a large, expensive radio.

Then you must have underclocked your T7300 to get 3 Watt ...yep?

P.S. I am kind of obsessed with power comsumption (climate change :))
