Here's my situation: I am going to buy an Asus G1 soon, it comes with Vista.
My dad brought over his new Dell with Vista for me to install some programs for him. After spending a couple hours with it, I don't like Vista!! Learning a new OS is not high on my list of things to do right now. I know and like XP, I have Home (desktop) & MCE (laptop) on my current computers.

I am planning to put XP on my new G1.

Could you guys please give me your opinions on which version, Pro or MCE? and why.
    or
Do you think I am crazy not to stay with Vista?

    Please give me some insite.

    Thank you all in advance.

    Charley

If you have no specific need for MCE, then the Home version will do fine. Professional will provid some extra netwroking features, but it isn't massively different to the Home version. Alot of people don't want Windows Vista, because of the driver problems and reduced performance.

Why would you be crazy? See my sig. Proud of it :D Seriously, I know some have the thinking that they will stay away from Vista until at least a service pack is out to iron out problems

See this thread for which XP. Shame I can't find the old sticky. Come on Chaz! Not everyone uses Vista! :p

LFC - Thank you for the link to that thread. I looked back a ways and couldn't find a similar thread. I was pretty sure this subject had come up in the past though. :)

I'm in agreement with Zero. Unless you need complex networking features you don't really need pro. Unless you need the Media Cntre software you don't really need MCE.

Home should be fine and right now I would take XP over Vista on a gaming machine, you'll get better performance and compatability.

I have my computers networked behind a router with filesharing enabled. I do a little light gaming, Civ 4, but I plan on moving my picture taking from .jpg to raw and need the added umph of a new machine to process raw's, alas the reason for the new lappy. Does any of that change you opinion?

Again thanks so much for your input.

Whatever OS is working on your computer right now will work on your new G1. Vista in no way is better at processing images and what not then XP. If pro works well for you right now you may as well put it on your G1.

I'm gonna break from the rest of the pack and say XP Profession, due to the enhanced features that you think you won't need but might need down the road.

    MCE is just overkill.
